Hey Forum, was driving around the other day and noticed a distinct smell of burning clutch, at first I thought it was the brakes but after sticking my head in every wheel well I didn't smell anything there.

Other symptoms are the truck feels a bit more sluggish than prior, and when I shift especially at lower gears it is a lot more clunky.

I had my brother jump in the truck who has experience with bad clutches before and he said my clutch doesn't feel like his other vehicles felt when the clutch was failing.

I also jacked up every corner and the tires spin just fine, so the brakes cant be the issue.

The smell is noticeable even after a minute, any suggestions on what do do next?

    Thanks

"The smell is noticeable even after a minute"

Is that a minute of engine running, like just idling in neutral for one minute or a minute of driving down the road and changing gears?

Also, how many miles on truck and clutch?

    I'd try a 3rd gear hard pull.
Drive the truck in 3rd gear.
Gt the RPM to about 2,500. Then let of the gas quickly, and then right back on the gas hard.
If the clutch is bad, it will slip and you'll "notice it".
If it's not bad, the truck will "buck" when you get back on the gas.

Hard to explain, but you'll notice it.

If you or someone else was riding the clutch, that smell can hang around for a long time on this truck. Body shop did it to me and I smelled that shit for like 3 days. How many miles on it? Under normal driving conditions, this can be a 250k+ mile clutch (TOB is another story, if that noise bothers you).

I can smell it after just idling the engine.

I tried the pull and it's definitely slipping

Basics. Tires, painted headlighes, UHLM, baby winch in the bed, and heated mirrors :)
Can confirm. Got 200k on mine now, and a few thousand of those were heavy towing miles. Clutch still works great. Not brand new but never slips. I’ll get around to changing it and the throwout bearing in another 50k or so.

I have noticed these clutches stink up a storm when ya beat on them though. And that smell lingers/comes back when the clutch gets hot. It probably feels different than other burnt clutches your brother has felt due to the accumulator, if that hasn’t been deleted.

I recommend deleting that accumulator when you put a new clutch in. It’s designed to soften the engagement to reduce shock-loading. In other words, a protection against drivers who don’t know how to properly clutch/shift smoothly and without dumping it. In doing so it inherently makes it easier to slip a but more with each gear change, leading to more wear. Bypassing the accumulator offers a much more tactile and precise feel.
