Since I could have DIED, I'm not upset - just embarrassed. I had about 20 local miles on the brake job. It make some noise backing up but I thought it was just a due to a break-in period. Today it failed completely.

Backed the truck out and NO BRAKES! Parking brake stopped the truck. The top caliper bolt FELL OUT and of course torqued the caliper backwards. The caliper clipped a counterweight, gouged the rim a bit. I apparently bent/broke the section of the hard line. Questions are:

Upper caliper brake bolt part number?

Can the hard line section of the brake line be replaced, or do I need to replace the whole thing up through the soft line?

It was the TOP bolt that fell out, presumably if one drove forward only one could go for hundreds of miles...

I'm hoping for the part numbers as the dealership is pretty far away.

    Same crap everyone else got

according to this post the bolt is a M12 x 1.25 thread so I'd just go buy a new bolt and not worry about getting a part number or bolt from the dealership.

Looks like u need just the hard metal line should be part# 47317-04050.

*Make sure you’re using an actual brake line wrench to disconnect, if not you’ll probably just round the nut off with standard wrenches. I’d also advise to spray with PB Blaster or another oil before attempting to loosen in case it’s frozen.

I did this deal last year and FUBARed it. The part is the same for left and right. I ordered an extra just in case and also I had problems getting it locally and had to drive out of state for it since I couldn’t deal with a long lead time.

If you have trouble getting the brake line out, put a pair of vise grips on it. At this point, it's toast anyway.

Don't feel too bad -- glad you are safe!

I had the same thing happen to me, driving deep in the back country of Death Valley no less. The top bolt, too, so I probably drove hundreds of miles without noticing it until I tried backed up. CRUNCH!

I guess I have my 16" rims to thank for not severing the brake line. Definitely scraped off all the wheel weights before getting back to pavement, but never lost the brakes!

It was TW member @Hobbs who saved my trip -- he went out and bought a replacement bolt that evening, then installed it for me in his driveway the next morning!

You can read the subsequent posts on that thread to see how it all turned out. I continued exploring Death Valley for at least another day or two.

In any case, as I expect you will in the future, I *always* torque these bolts to spec (91 ft lbs, although I round up), and smear them with blue Loctite.

Note: Same goes for the four hub-assembly bolts (behind the wheel hub), except instead of whatever the factory torque spec is, I just crank the absolute fuck out of them, and then some. Those I triple-checked with a crows-foot and they still backed out!

Appears to be a few less after the brake job.

Any of these will work. I'm using Carlson H821 on my 4Runner, same bolt size: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog...,brake+&+wheel+hub,caliper+bracket+bolt,13055

    upload_2024-12-8_13-17-19.png

Parts catalog shows the driver's side small hard line P/N is 4731804110 for 2005-2008, and 4731804130 for 2009+. Use a 10mm flare nut wrench or Knipex pliers wrench (with its 10:1 squeezing power) to loosen.

This recently also happened to a Moab off-road recovery guy, I watch his videos on youtube sometimes.

He was pulling a stranded vehicle up steep slickrock in reverse at the time. Jammed up his wheel so hard it cracked the rim open and let the air out!

Another entry for don't feel bad and be glad you're safe and not more damage!

I pulled over once to help a girl trying to "change a flat tire" on the side of the road and I discovered the front upper caliper bolt had fell out and the caliper wedged into the wheel and completely shattered/blew through the inside of the barrel of the wheel. The dad had done her brakes a day or so before, and she gave me her phone to explain to him what had happened lol. That was an interesting conversation... I swapped the caliper bolt to the top one, made it really tight, put on the spare and she limped it home.

solved, with embarassment, but here are the Toyota Part Numbers:

47318-04110 Formed Metal Brake Line $11.65
    90080-10213 Caliper Bolts, Flanged (2) $9.07

I completely bled/flushed all the brakes and I now have fresh fluid. Time to move on!
