You sometimes, use synth motor oil? So, you go back and forth??? I was always under the impression that you should stick with one or the other, following break-in.

What PSI are you running in those stock tires? I'm also curious about the secondary filter mod you mentioned.

    thanks!

Look at the owners manual, for example, the engine might be 5/30w or 10/30w. Get the same weight and standard recomendation. Often the synthetic is a higher standard, also it wont void the waranty, the oil simply must equal or exceed manufacturers recomendation.
Your transfer case and differentials take a gear lube, 75/90 if i recall, make sure to note if your rear axle has,or has not, a mechanical limited slip. If it does you need to add a friction modifier. Not sure what the manual trans took , i think it may be the same as the rear axle too. To be sure , check your manual, things sometimes change from year to year.

Brand wise, mobil one is popular, castrol too, many bicker threads written on whats best.Balance price with a trustworthy brand imo.

I usually use Pennzoil because its cheaper, but ya Mobil 1 seems fine. My truck actually comes stock with 0w20 synthetic oil from the factory I just found out so Im looking into how goo it is now

You can mix synthetic and regular, the small amount of oil left in the block makes it even less to worry about. Basically I didnt like the current synthetic prices, had no deals,so I used regular oil this round.

I may catch hell , but its true, synthetic used to be much better than dino oil, newer standards made dino oil improve.. so the difference isnt as great as it used to be in the early 90s,synthetics are still better. My truck still has the 200k potential wheather I use synthetic or dino, dads 226,000mile corolla shows its in the regular maintainance.

Tire psi , I often go to 36 psi instead of the doors 29 psi recomendation. Stiffer ride, but not bad.

2ndary filter mod, its something best to read on first on threads here. Gen 2 has a charcoal filter after the air filter, with it removed its possible the engine breathes better, seems to work .

Don't be too upset with the low MPG's. You have to consider truck size (double cab, ac cab, reg) also bed length. Manual vs auto , and the biggest is 4x4 or 4x2. Here in Ohio I'm getting around 15mpg with mixed city and highway with a 2011 Double Cab Long Bed 4x4 Auto V6.

I keep off the freeway for the most part. I'm never in rush hour traffic luckily. Having said that, between stop lights, most states having 75mph on freeways, and someone having a v-6,it would seem tough to get 300mi per tank at times.I gave that up when I had a v-8 dakota and got 12 in town.

Just got 515 miles on a tank in my 5 lug access cab. Filled it back up with 20.4 gals. If my math is correct that's a little over 25 mpg. I'm happy! :)

When I took the taco to CO last September, the tanks that were not loaded were some of the best mileage I have ever got. It is the fact that less fuel is sent throught the injectors when the air is thin. Every tank in CO I got about 2 MPG more. The elevations I was driving was about 9000 ft average.

I got the same mileage! 480 mi, 18.7 gals in the tank. Man, you really ran your taco down to fumes!

FYI, I have noticed a 2 MPG difference in miles 0-5,000 and miles 5,000 and onward. The engine seems to run a bit better once its broken in. Those of you with new Tacos who arent happy with the mileage, wait until after 5k.

Synthetic oil's have better flow characteristics and shear point's(in gear boxes)....you still have a combustion engine and need to change synthetic oil as often as dino...yea,i know what THEY say....just change it if you use it...don't take a chance.

Yes I did! I was away at college with no money and had to come home so I just took off and waited for it to run out. But amazingly it didn't. My gas hand was completely past the E line!

Big difference between 70 and 80. If I keep mine at 70 I get a consistant 21.6 mpg's. If I keep it at 80 I get around 19.6 mpg's. I use synthetic for all my fluids (mobil 1) and 93 octane gas (sunoco)
