Yea but they get me with the one way fee. Having it shipped is actually cheaper, and then I don’t have to mess with towing it.

Interesting - I bet because of where it's going I guess

I've brought an IL rental to CA on a one way along with a CA rental to TX on a one way as well

I think it’s cause it’s to and from two small towns in the middle of nowhere

Both seem equally ridiculous places to haggle. They rent trucks on a day and mile rate, I wouldn’t ever have guessed there’s wiggle room there

I never considered negotiating rentals mostly because I book them online. Hard to barter with the computer.

When I moved from Chicago to Colorado both U-Haul and Penske's online reservations forced a minimum week-long rental period because my pickup and return were so far apart. I actually drove the Penske truck around town for a few days in Colorado because why not, I was paying for it anyway.

Maybe it would have been different if I made the reservation at the counter though?

    Yeah

Regarding the other guy that hits a brick wall easily, there are plenty of extra charges, or better yet "tiers" in which they charge customers that they can easily lower and/or waive

Think of either parts or labor rate when getting work done at a shop - a car rental agency works the same way in many ways

I've done it both in person and on the phone

Sometimes even just an oversupply of vehicles on their lot is enough reason to give you a rate discount

Then again it dawned on me that we're in holiday season so that could be part of why he's getting charged so much as well

One common thing that happens is when a vehicle you reserved isn't available on the day of, so they try to put you in a lower tier vehicle when they can just as easily put you in a higher tier at the same rate you agreed on

I got an upgrade to a Tahoe at one point when I had actually reserved a car when we flew to Vegas about 2 years ago ish

If I'm buying groceries, I'm gonna pay what the item is listed at.

If I'm going to buy a TV, it's assumed that I at least went online to see the price so I know what I'm paying when I get to Best Buy or wherever.

But when it comes to services like renting a car, yeah there's room to negotiate

@Ozark_RegCab If you don't have too much stuff with you, maybe flying is an option?

Looks like you can get from Rapid City to Spokane for under $300.

I've never done it, but have heard about a lot of y'all doing it here

Did they close it off to non-residents? Or what changed exactly?
