There are trade offs for sure. If I was going to replace regular cab 4cyl Tacoma with a new V6 Frontier that is an upgrade anyway you look at it. More motor more interior warranty any new vehicle is going to have a price tag.

My concern is I can buy the Frontier I want today and drive it off the lot. I can't walk out my door today and buy the Tacoma I want. If I needed a truck today. I would have to make a compromise somewhere. I'm shopping trucks not Tacomas. I can find other trucks with out direct injection only and a less cramped engine bay than the Tacoma, that's before I think about availability and cost. There's a lot of competition out there.

 

You wait even longer and you can get one even cheaper. Nissan has about 12 to 18 months of cash left if they do not get an investor anytime soon.

 

I'm watching to see how low they will go, not good for Nissan they need a lot more than the long bed option for the P4X Frontier.

Yes to a lot of competition. The more we shopped the better a Tacoma was in all that and especially for what we need and value. The safety rating was up there but so was the comfort, turbo power, manufacturer and dealer reputations. Once committed to a big spend we want it to be best.

If you use the toyota.com and Kiss My Grits app sites well you can find grounded and incoming vehicles, get in queue or chase one down.

Now with Nissan having more trouble as a manufacturer it could be that incentives would look good against Toyota or might improve.

 

But Don't you have/use the Vol control on the Steering Can Bus?

 

In the end of July this was a nice read. Not too many issues. Right now the financing is .99% for 48 months. Slim picking but loaded SR5 is around 44k out the door. Far cry from my 09 AT.09% for 48 months and 17K out the door.

 

$44k OTD seems a little high for SR5. I bought my TRD OR Premium non-hybride 2 months ago for right under $51k OTD (sticker was $55k). Maybe prices have come up in two months? Shop around and expect to get 7-8% off MSRP. BTW, I'm happy with my 4th gen and traded in a '23 TRD OR Premium (with my only real complaint being drivetrain). 4th gen drivetain and seat comfort sold me on the new truck.

 

Sticker is $45,954. Published discount is $5,370. I do have a problem with the estimated registration fee of $1,440. State tax is $2,689.90. Destination charge is $1,495. Maryland tax is 6.5%

Part of the $1,440 registration fee is a $799 document fee whis is way too high. It should be around $300.

Buying a vehicle is an adventure but you have to remember you are the one with the money. Walking out of a dealership for a difference of $500 is rather easy to do.

Love it.

While the 2.5 isn't going to win any races (except against your 2021 ), I love how it drives. The low torque almost reminds me of a diesel, however the torque drops off after 3k RPMs so higher RPM doesn't scale as well as I would like; the HP curve is a little flat.

I don't have a heavy foot and I drive in eco mode so YMMV, but when I need more power, this engine delivers below 2k RPMs and accelerates up hill with no fuse or down shifts.

One complaint is the engine is noisy at idle, especially outside the truck, and has the typical Toyota *tick*tick*tick, but I don't think its a big deal.

I'm getting great MPG's, averaging 24 currently. In heavy city traffic, MPG's can be in the upper teens. After 60mph, MPG's start to drop and 70+ will be pretty brutal to your MPG average but 55-65 highway still averages in the mid to upper 20's for me. I've gotten as high as 29MPGs on some trips and my daily work commute of 30 miles averages 25-27 MPGs.

 

I am in Canada and I looked on Toyotas website the 25 of my model manual offroad is 3k more then it was last year in 24 when I got mine

 

So the 44k is tags, tax, and destination charge? $800 doc fee is ridiculous.

 

That are the options if you want to stick with Toyota tho? A 3rd gen with an antiquated/weak V6 and a spazzy transmission that should have been put out to pasture years ago?

 

The document fee should be around $300. Unfortunately the all weather floor mats, sill protectors, and the quick charge package are on the sticker and cannot be removed. I can get better for less. I still need to work on the overall cost with the dealer.

So true, I have an 09 with the 2.4 and the only time I have power issues it in the summer with the AC on and trying to pass another vehicle. I have to down shift to 3rd gear to get in the torque power band. Other than that the 09 has served me well.

Yes, it should be, but don't get hung up on that line item. Same with the overpriced other crap.

Consider what those things are worth to you (even if $0) and come up with your target OTD price.

Negotiate on that basis - how the dealer discounts one thing or another inside the deal doesn't matter, focus on OTD.

IMHO if you don't walk out at least once, you're not getting your best deal.

and frankly, be prepared for them not to meet your target. Repeat at other dealers. You'll either find one which meets your price, or you'll find out you need to reset your expectations to a higher OTD target.

This is all a lot easier when you're shopping because you want to rather than because you have to.

 

Dang, hard to believe sticker on a SR5 can be $46k. I nearly walked out on my '25 truck purchase because I didn't finance anything and they wanted to charge me an extra $500 because of it. I politely them know I'm not paying more and they came back and closed the deal.

 

It is all about the OTD price. The problem is face is the favorable interest rate on the 2024 model year. There are not many SR5 trim levels out there. If we have to buy a 2025 SR5 I have already secured financing below the Toyota Financial offering. When I run the interest rates it would cost an extra $3,400 for a 2025 SR5. The advantage of a 2025 SR5 would be more color options and a better availability of the SR5.

Most people do not understand that when you go into the dealership you are the one with the cash. Weather you pay cash or finance the vehicle it is all your cash.

 

Another item is the days of “cash is king” are long gone. Dealer gets commission on financing and may even have a quota to meet. So the cash buyer can often get the better deal by financing and then paying it off in a couple months.

Also factor that once you drive off the lot the 2024 becomes a soon-to-be two year old used truck, and the 2025 just one year old since we should see 2026’s before too long. Insurance and blue book valuations don’t consider date of purchase. This difference is less important though when you keep a truck9-10 years, unless it gets totaled or stolen.
