Almost put a stranger in the hospital

I almost just put some "religious activist" in the hospital.

I have a class on the Syracuse University campus which is cut in half by a 4 lane city street. Lots of activists use this public space as a place to "communicate" with the student body since you are stuck for a few minutes waiting to cross the street and can't get away from them.

SU is chosen by these hate mongers specifically because of its high concentration and very active communities of minorities of every type. The campus is genuinely the most diverse and harmonious place I have ever been and everyone is very comfortable and trusting with everyone else. I wish everyone could live in such a community.

On my way to class this guy is standing there with a huge sign screaming at the top of his lungs about how atheists are all going to hell and so is the entire country for recognizing some "atheist religious holiday" on April 1st. This somehow seemlessly transitioned into some hate filled statement about homosexuality.

As I stand there my father, a respected member of his community and lifelong atheist, has just given a sermon at a church. And my two friends are suddenly dropping hands realizing that if he spots them they are about to become targets.

On my way back I had to walk by him again. Now he is attacking every religion besides his own, and minorities who follow them. Shamelessly damming people standing not two feet in front of him who didn't have the balls to stand up to an overweight middle aged white guy.

As I was crossing the street I pretty much snapped and just started cursing him out and walking right at him since he was standing in everyone's way to get even more negative attention. I'm not a big guy, but I am pretty well built and the coward jumped back to get out of my way. It was all I could do not to rip him a new one and chase him off the campus. As I was trying to cool off and get out of there the guy is behind me taunting me and preaching about how "college students who spew vile and hate filled words will be dammed to hell".

I could have turned around and killed him. 20 minutes later I am still sitting here fuming. Not only because he is a racist hiding behind a shield of twisted and foul religious morality, but because he got the response he was looking for in me.

He got exactly what he wanted from you. That drirtbag isn't worth your time or effort or worth being in jail for. Sorry your campus allows people like that there. Best thing to do is ignore them and hopefully they will move on.

 

I bet it would have been worth a criminal record to hit some crackpot.

This happens at my university as well. Basically if you believe in something your going to hell or something like that lol.I just ignore and go on with my day. I have Calculus to worry about. Don't let them get to you.

This thread needs to focus on how the OP reacted to the situation not on the fact it has religious tries.

IMO. Yelling at those guys is worthless. If you attack them they will sue you to kingdom come. That is how they make their living. I am glad you stood up for yourself. Just make sure to keep hands off.
