Hello everyone, I want to add a Cold air intake to my first gen but I have heard good and bad things. Some people have said that if the regular intake works fine why change it and it is not worth it . Also would any of you guys happen to know if I would need a tune for the Cold air intake after installation ? Curious to hear every ones thoughts and would love to see those who already have Cold air intakes!

    1) you will see no hp gains. Maybe some noise. The problem is they suck in hot engine bay air.
    2) all the cold air intakes use cleanable air filters which suck at filtering and get the MAF all oily ruining it.
    3) No tune required.
Imo I would get an intake pipe, just the rubber piece( look up airaid) probably no power increase but it does delete the intake silencer. You could also look up the deck plate mod. I have both but for different reasons. The airraid tube is plastic which I tapped for my methonal injection and the deck plate because a snorkel with the supercharger is a big restriction.

I’m going to agree with tacoman

also from experience….among the cone filter/old version 1 of an Accessport (power programmer) cost me a new Short Block on my RSTi

in fact, once I got the car fixed/running with new engine, no tuner would touch car unless OE air box was used

What tacoman saying makes perfect sense
Post MAF, pre throttle body….get all that restrictive crap gone. Make the correctly MAF monitored air moves quicker/smoother into throttle body. Use aluminum tubes with silicon connections

Hell, I get what you are looking for….

Myself (bc of my times around the Sun), would rather spend $$ on an under the hood fuel pressure gauge than cone filter.
I.E. looks cool but performs a function

Does the intake pipe cause it to make that sound, that is kind of the only reason I plan on getting an Cold air intake, because of the AWESOME SOUND

As I am reading through the thread I am aware that the cons do very much outweigh the only pro that I see which is the sound the intake would make

Sorry no sound without cone filter

    but
I remember when driving dad’s 74 ford Torino SW……..my idiot buddies taught me that you could flip the top dish of air cleaner. Oh yeah was louder

    now I’m not recommending this……
But same principle would happen if you cut holes in top of the air box
if Your dead set on cone filter I would just do that for that sound you want

    Former 1st Gen owner here.
    DIY'd a cone filter CAI.

Chopped the air box lid off.
    Added the cone filter.
    Installed a throttle body spacer.

No tune needed. No CEL. No performance loss.
    It did NOT improve anything.

Sounded cool. But that's all it did.

    Would not do it again.
    Money and time "wasted"......

Factory intake setup is more cold air than any aftermarket.
There is really no gain to be made here, other than wasting money.
