seriously, i feel like we're being penalized for getting hitched. we got absolutely FUCKED on our tax returns. we both have student loans (i've got about 18 or 19k left, she has substantially more). so we both deduct our interest. you can ONLY deduct student loan interest if you file jointly. we were going to file separately but had no choice. and even then, after you file jointly, your student loan interest has a cap, which she more than maxed out on her own so i didn't even get to deduct mine. its such bullshit

Hmmm, I am headed down this road very soon. Luckily, we don't have that particluar scenario to contend with. But yes, all tax code is fucked. Ever tried being self-employed and buying a house? You do everything you can to deduct and write off self-employment stuff to reduce your AGI and taxes, and then your income looks like crap to mortgage brokers, desite the fact that you are bringing in more and doing much more to effectively manage your finances. You can't win against special interest laws fabricated by the rich for the rich combined with bureaucratic idiocy of federal institutions that value process over people and reality. :bananadead:

it really is irritating when you realize just how badly you're getting screwed. BTW, a little on topic but a little off.... does anyone else think its stupid we even have to do our own taxes? when my employer takes all kinds of stuff out of my paycheck, he doesn't make me do it or figure it out, htey have a department for that. The gov wants/needs our money, so they take it every paycheck without asking, then tell us to do the math and submit the paper work. wtf. i mean come on, if they are taking money i dont want to give them, then why am i doing the paper work? its like a mugger coming up to you in the street, giving you a gun, then asking you to mug yourself, but then still expecting you to hand over your wallet when you're done.

Turbotax, motherfucker, do you speak it? Seriously, maybe you are already using it, but man, it is the easy button.

OK, think of the alternative. Everything is done for you by your employer (large corporation) and IRS without your input. Isn't that way scarier and undemocratic? And it eliminates the opportunity for you to commit fraud, so only your corporation and the IRS get to commit fraud. That's not fair.

oh yeah, turbo tax is awesome. but my real problem is with teh laws and how they get them, that little bit about paperwork was just a rant. for example, why do i have to file jointly to declare my student loan interest, but can still declare my truck or house interest if i file separately? alot of the laws just seem arbitrary and make no sense on any kind of logical level. for example, the scenario i'm talking about specifically targets and punishes couples who both seek higher education (and need loans) and want to get married and it is ONLY affecting those couples.

I do agree with you about the tax's though. i sure as shit dont want to do them, but i'm not sure i'd trust the government to get it right year after year without screwing me over. there probably isn't a good solution, i'm just venting cause i hate the idea of doing work, so that other people can have my money.
