Anyone have an access cab rear storage solution with a subwoofer?

Recently got a 2015 access cab and I’m looking for ideas for a rear storage solution WITH an integrated subwoofer. I’ve been a lot of ideas without a sub, but curious if anyone here has a subwoofer and can share some ideas. I don’t want to place a sub enclosure on top of the platform, I want it hidden and protected.

I’d like to fit a full size 10” woofer (JL 10W6 or similar) that will require an enclosure about 10” tall at least. My original idea was to build a box that’s the same height as the rear seat support, and just put it on the ground behind the drivers seat and then put a platform on top of it (will be hard to fit a full size 10” non shallow mount sub though). My other idea is to get one of these enclosures that would fit a large 10” sub, and then put a platform on top, with usable storage underneath. However I’m wondering if the main platform above it will be annoying high to load heavy coolers etc. If you have any photos of your setup I’d love to see it.

 

I put my 10 inch woofer in a box very similar to the picture you posted. I love it. It makes a great armrest for backseat passengers. My dog rode on it for miles. If I need to pack stuff in there, I have a plywood platform I made that sits on top of the box and stretches across the back. I highly recommend this sub enclosure.

 

In my case I just removed the useless jump seats and rear center console and installed a Pioneer 10" shallow sub in a wedge box held against the rear bulkhead. That totally opened up the space for storage and the sub was still pretty stealth. Later I added a drop in "parcel shelf" that rested on the rear of the front center console and the top of the sub box that we used mostly for our dog (23# JRT) whilst traveling. He loved it up there.

 

@Liteman This is great to know. I’ve been thinking about it a lot and this enclosure with a platform on top really seems like the best option for a full size 10” sub while retaining a good amount of storage. I’m also assuming the sub would pretty much be hidden. Do you have any photos of your setup with the platform on?

@Raylo That sounds great, I’m planning on removing the seats, console, and back panel as well to gain more space and also make everything look cleaner. I’ve had shallow mount subs in my last 3 vehicles and they’re great but I’m itching again to have a full size sub. Do you have any photos of your setup? I’d love to still see what you came up with.

 

Man, 10" is all you really need in an access cab and the shallow one I had worked great. Here is my old install thread. Later I added a nylon strap with quick disconnect to hold the top of the sub to the LATCH point. I actually used another 10" shallow sub, this time JL Audio, in my 2023 Tundra. Sounds fantastic.

Sweet, thanks for sharing. That’s a good idea about the strap/quick disconnect. Yeah by “full size” sub I didn’t mean something huge, I just want a full size 10” sub (non shallow mount). I’ve had a large JLs (13w7 and 12w6) a long time ago which were crazy and more than bass than I need now. However in my 1st gen Tundra access cab that this Tacoma replaced I just had two JL 10w1v3-4 shallow mounts and I have a Kicker 10 shallow mount in my daily driver right now. They sound really good for the size but I miss the SQL and lower freqs, that shallow mount subs just can’t really hit so I figured a JL 10w6 would be perfect for this Tacoma.

 

My Tacoma also has the Supercrewsounds 10" sub box that looks almost identical to the one you posted. This allows for a non-shallow mount sub. Its a full Image Dynamics IDQ 10" sub. Originally i built a long platform to sit on top of the sub box that had long 'support legs' down to the floor in each corner so you could put stuff all across the back of the cab, plus underneath it. Once my dog got too big to sit on top of the platform i removed it, but it was useful when i had it.

 

This is great to know, I’m looking at that enclosure and it seems perfect. It’s interesting though that the dimensions appear identical to the “Subthump” brand one in my photo, but the internal volume is almost .2 cubic ft smaller (.8 vs .96). Does yours allow you to adjust and recline both driver and passenger seats all the way back? Have any photos by chance of your setup with the top platform on when you had it?

 

You may consider trying to find the JL stealthbox for your truck. They pop up used every once in a while. I have one. It’s fantastic. The jump seats flip up and down as they’re supposed to. So, when they’re down, they create a nice platform for your stuff. You do sacrifice the bulk of your center console volume tho.

Just started building this but it’s 1” furniture MDF made exactly to JL’s sealed box specs. Lot’s more to go but it’s what I’ve got for now.

 

Thanks for sharing, these look sweet and I came across them before. I definitely use my center console though so it would be a bummer to lose all that space. It definitely seems like a great solution though to not lose much space in behind the seats.

Damn! I had that same sub years ago powered by a JL 1200/1, it’s an insane sub. I was thinking of getting a similar wedge and just putting it on the floor behind the passenger seat like you but I think I want to retain that area for storage, I can’t decide. Do you have a photo of yours? Curious to see it back there.

 

I’ll have to search for some photos. I definitely have some but don’t remember where I’ve stored them (looked on my phone and don’t see them).

the one negative about the enclosure is no, I cannot recline my seats all the way back. Not really an issue for me as im only 5’10”, but that could be an issue for others.

 

That’s good to know, I figured it would limit recline somewhat. Wouldn’t be an issue for me drivers seat but somethings in the passenger seat it’s nice to fully recline on long trips. I wonder if I could build my own which would allow full recline, however I’m guessing a 10” sub is just too wide to not interfere with the side of the seats. Thanks for the info

The back wall and the sliding window get the brunt of it; lol. Pretty much shakes the entire cab.
The enclosure is 103lbs so it doesn't move or vibrate that much.

 

This is how I had a 12W3 in mine. Said uck fit and threw a big ass enclosure behind passenger. Totally worth it.

 

Incase anyone else is looking for ideas for an integrated subwoofer/storage system, I ended up going with the idea talked about here. I have a JL 10w6 in this and it sounds great and you can’t even see the sub unless you’re bending down. The rear cabin wall panel is built around the sub, and the back wall is treated with CLD, 3M thinsulate (over the cabin vents and also for decoupling), mass loaded vinyl, and then the rear plywood has CCF adhered directly to the back. I used 1x2s mounted to the factory threaded openings to get the back wall sitting straight, and also to make mounting the plywood much easier.
Definitely lost a bit of space having the sub, but the extra layer of storage more than makes up for it.
