I have a stock 03 Tacoma with the 3.4 prerunner. Replaced the engine with a JDM about 6 months ago. Been running great till last week. And I noticed once or twice that as I pressed the pedal there was no response from the engine but it would come back after a couple seconds and drive just fine. Just in case it is relevant I did nuke the original 250k engine when the lower hose let go(an hour away from replacing all the hoses had just got the parts) anyway I was watching the tps on my scan tool and it was normal then it happened, pressed the pedal and nothing just idled and no change from the tps. Tried raving straight at the TB and (cable not DBW) nothing for about 45 degrees then it started to move the throttle plate. I have opened it up and honestly it doesn’t look like it broke or twisted. Can this be fixed without replacing the whole throttle body. Oh and it’s the 4 wire tps.

This is what awaits all the 03/04 Tacoma's eventually....

solutions are hard to come by......short of buying a whole new TB.....

these are just now aging into that sensor failure/problem

everybody tries a new TPS sensor....rarely ever works...

Thanks for posting that pic inside the sensor......first we've ever seen that..

Most here are pre 03/04.......but these are now coming of age...

There's a few odd threads where they tried to clean that.....maybe these 2 post have something..

So if I'm reading your post correctly, your TPS does nothing when the throttle is moved manually (at the throttle body)? If that's the case, I was precious under the impression that you cannot get the OEM 4-wire TPS sensor from Toyota. But then I found this:

    https://www.yotashop.com/tps-sensor...e=1&gbraid=0AAAAADOqasAWN1e1EMVPRFrAUrAW5PoKg

Too bad for me, I bought a brand new throttle body (complete with the new TPS sensor), just to keep on the shelf for if I ever have problems with my stock one. 300k miles with no issues yet, so maybe it was a silly purchase

That's not the right sensor......thats on the other side of the TB

    03/04 are brandnew electronic TB's

That cable sensor is integrated into TB on these.....and evidently toyota does want you to mess with it...

dodge cummins have same problem.......only difference is dodge sells that one....

To Red_03Taco can you take a pic like my 3rd pic to compare. I’d love to see a comparison to see if something shifted.

Are you sure you cant take tuner cleaner and clean/free up the old one?

Makes you want to use super caution when cleaning 03/04 TB's
and not cleaning may accelerate the wear and tear on that sensor.

damn if you do and damned if you dont...

Cleaning won’t fit it. The silver side is locked into its location and the black side(inside) is governed by the throttle plate. Which make it more confusing as to what changed without seeing a known good.

The problem is gonna be under that plastic part in 2nd pic

I think eventually everyone will swap backward to an 01/02 TB's and matching ecm...

cant think of anything they'd use different except egr and most likely charcoal cannister setup

this is not going away....there's gonna be more and more of you

I know. But maybe if I can fix it or find a replacement bolt on(doubtful) it will help others

And when you put that back together ....do you have to catch that little arm just right.....or hook under the spinning part in the TB

slapped back together and may not catch right.....

That 'carcarenut' that has all those toyota repair videos on Youtube might be worth writing to.........
bet he's come across these too.....or Timmy the toolman

As I say....there's gonna be more and more
......this one of very few problems that a reasonable solution escapes us

we'll still have a doz people say its TPS......none of which own an 03/04

On newer chevys you cant buy/replace the universals anymore......have to buy whole new drive shaft.....
    .....progress

The silver arm seems like it should be in contact with the black nub on the TB. But unless I turn it 45 degrees it doesn’t. And everything feels solid like it’s as it should be

Yeah on that last thread link I posted above....
looks very difficult to get access to the contacts....beyond my skills

and think its too tight just to shoot tuner cleaner....without taking apart

    IMG_20230619_012136_1.jpg

very unusual that toyota doesnt sell a part....
it must have to do with an EPA rule or mandate...

    IMG_20230619_012059_1.jpg

Looks sealed pretty tight.......good to keep crap out......
but dang hard to impossible to de ox those contacts

You mean remove the sensor and take a pic of what lies underneath? I probably can't do that until next week because I'm moving tomorrow and all my stuff (tools, and the spare throttle body) is packed away and boxed up

Just FWIW, I bought a brand new OEM throttle body for my '03 Tacoma from my local Toyota dealership parts counter last spring. I bought it because I'd read about this issue and didn't want my truck to be out of commission over it. So I'd call your local parts dealer and ask about availability for a new throttle body assembly

That thing is sealed tight. I’m going to bring mine to a pick a part and search for something that looks compatible. Maybe I’ll get lucky and if so I will post my findings. If it comes to it I’ll look into a new one but damn I am soooo deep into this truck financially I can’t sell it and I really do love this thing.

Just putting this out there because like 5 of these threads have hit recently...
It's likely possible to adapt a different E-throttle fairly easily since they all work very similarly. You can unscrew the butterfly valve on the OEM one and get a couple silicone couplers. Just a thought... I'm sure this will get worse and worse if these are discontinued
