Good morning guys, let’s get this week going.

I’m headed out with my buddy Mike for some type of adventure. We don’t know what yet, we’ll figure it out as we go. Probably going to be a wet one as they keep saying rain, and a lot of it, is headed our way. It’s on the radar but not close yet so we’re going for it.

Have a great day and I’ll see you later unless we float away.

Good afternoon guys :hattip: Sorry for the delay, life got in the way. Hope it’s been a good Tuesday for all of you.

Yesterday’s adventure didn’t amount to much and there was no swimming involved, in fact it wasn’t even wet. For all the doom and gloom and flash flood warnings they gave us the rain stayed about 30 miles north of us.

I went over to Mike's house and helped him throw a line about 40' up in a tree to hang his antenna if the UPS guy will deliver it. It’s been in a weather delay for 2 days :annoyed: Anyway after getting that done we headed to Pensacola for lunch at a favorite spot. After eating since it wasn’t raining we decided to go out to Ft. Pickins on the beach and play with my radio. It was grey and gloomy skies for this trip

    upload_2024-12-10_15-36-4.jpg

This is a different part of the National Seashore than our last trip. All of the bad weather threats kept most of the people away too, we had the beach to ourselves.

    upload_2024-12-10_15-38-27.jpg

Unfortunately, the solar conditions had the radio bands up and down so we didn’t make a lot of contacts but we had fun trying.

Me and my very red face from the Efudux https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-16269/fluorouracil-topical/details cream prescribed by my dermatologist for some pre cancerous spots due to too much time on the beach and boats in the sun :( There’s some irony here…

After about an hour and a half of trying to activate the park we gave up and called it a day. It was still a good time and got us out of the house.

My contacts for the day. I was pretty happy with the one to Hawaii, 4250 miles. When the bands were open they were great but then they would shut down and you wouldn’t hear a thing for 15-20 minutes. It was interesting that all of the contacts were over 1,000 miles when it did work.

An empty beach and 70* in December made it pretty great

I’d trade you but just for a limited time. I don’t think I’d keep well in 70 degree weather in December.

    Sounds like a fun day!

What holds the antenna, a spike in the ground?
    No guy wires needed?
Is it multi section that you put together or does it telescope like an old car antenna?

Come on down, as you can see the beaches aren’t crowded this time of the year.

Yes, a 3’ piece of 2” OD PVC pipe that I drive into the ground is the base. I’ll hammer it in about a foot deep in the sand, 6” will do it in firmer soil. The mast slides down over the PVC and will stay up as long as the wind isn’t blowing too hard. If it is blowing I have a guide ring that slides over the mast for 3 guys lines.

The mast is a telescoping fiberglass sections, 10 meters (about 33’) tall. It’s sectional like an old car antenna. The top section is about 3/8” in diameter, the bottom about 2 1/4”. The actual radio antenna we were using is just a piece of 16 gauge speaker wire that is attached to the mast. Five more pieces of wire spread on the ground at the base makes the ground plane for it.
