    Hi-
New here. My first Tacoma! 2023 SR5.

Driver side BSM not working. Light works in the mirror. Buzzer works. Pass side works fine. It's on the verge of the 36k mile warranty running out so I took it to the local dealer. They said the pass side 'computer' needs to be replaced and quoted $1800! They said it appears to have been hit so no warranty. There is no accidents on the carfax. I told them no. But, from the reading I've done, this doesn't make sense. Why would they want to replace the pass side when it's the driver side not working? The cross traffic works when cars approach from the pass side. It lights up both mirror lights and beeps. But nothing from the dr side.

I'm thinking just replace the dr side sensor. Thoughts?

    TIA,
    Scott

My drivers side didn't work at 27 miles on the truck. They said it was adjusted twice when I brought it in and it would fail on the way home from the dealer. I ended up putting a steel bumper on it without provisions for BSM so I just turned it off and put the switch in the dash so I could use the spot. I might have the drivers side computer for sale.

Thanks. So what I'm hearing is the system really isn't reliable. At the price, isn't worth fixing.

I guess what upsets me here is the dealer seemingly screwing me out of a warranty repair. I don't get how replacing the pass side sensor will fix the dr side.

It really sounds like there is damage on the rear bumper and they are attributing the failed sensor to the damage. You can either pay to have the module replaced, replace it yourself, or try another dealer. But if there is damage on the bumper, it will be hard to get the sensor to work again. Just because the carfax is clean doesn't mean it wasn't in a wreck...that is the risk of buying used vehicles.

But they want to replace the one that's working. That's what I don't get.

I would imagine there is a master and a slave module. Maybe the pass side is the master and is not communicating with the driver side? Have you looked under the bumper to see if there is any damage on either side? When you paid the dealer for the diagnostic, what errors is the system throwing out?

No visible damage that I can see. I did look up under there also and it looks ok to me. From my reading, the sensors are the same. No dr/pass difference. Dealer didn't give me any info other than replace the pass side and a price.

Get another opinion/analysis from different dealers. A forum only gives opinions not analysis.
At least take it back to "local dealer" and ask the questions you're asking here. Ask for a full explanation until you understand. Ask for original tech or manager.

I’d agree with above on getting another opinion. From what I can see by looking on all data the drivers side is the master. It’s odd to have a fault and the other side still work since usually any ADAS system will turn off if there is a fault detected. I would advise against trying to repair the issue yourself since anything ADAS will require an OEM scan tool for the most part to initialize to the vehicle when replaced and to calibrate to actually work properly.
