Figured I'd give an update to my progress. Still haven't smoked -- it's been 2 weeks since I put them down (yay :D) My wife and I are in Pennsylvania spending the holidays with her family. A couple of them smoke, but they've been nice and haven't done it around me.

I can smell when people have smoked now, which is pretty new... lol I've had a few beers and haven't really wanted one, so that's good. I was afraid that drinking would set me back, but so far so good -- my support network here is pretty good :D

    Well that's it for now!

Glad to hear of your success so far. It's been about 2 months for me now and I'm pretty amazed with myself.

I quit 5 years ago, and had to also quit drinking for awhile. The urge is just way to powerful, and when drinking you say "F it, gimme a smoke!" The combo was/is still very powerful. After 5 years, IT'S STILL THERE! If I drank during the first couple months after quitting, it would be wine. For some reason I don't get the urge when drinking wine.

I also used cut straws to the size of cigs, chewed sunflower seeds, and exercised a bunch. There are trigger points when you always "need" a cig, so do something else when that happens. Instead of having a cig after a meal, put in some sunflower seeds or whatever you want. But don't trade chew for cigs, that's just silly.

i quit exactly one year ago (my EAS from the Marine corps) and i know what you mean about smelling other people that smoke, its nasty. its one of, maybe the only, smart decision ive ever made in my life. i quit cold turkey and now the only time i have the slightest urge is after a big meal when my stomach is full. but congrats on kicking that nasty habit.

Congrats to all who have successfully quit smoking. I've never smoked, so I can't imagine how hard it is.
My BF has been 'trying' (not very hard ) unsuccessfully for year to quit, he tried again last New Years, well now he is smoking again . He has started with the excuses and of course it is getting worse and worse. What really gets on my nerves is he has stomach issues and breathing issues which get worse when he smokes, so then he complains because he doesn't feel well etc....so I say to stop smoking...endless circle and I try everything I can, but now everytime I see him smoking it makes me feel terrible, angry, disappointed...
He is hooked on Commit Lozenges also :(. He won't try Chantix. Maybe I should buy him the patches, he never tried those, but I'm afraid he will smoke while wearing them and get sick.
He starts again when he is stressed and he is super stressed right now and there is nothing I can do to change any of that.

Any suggestions for us loved ones to help someone quit?

congrats.....probably one of the most important things you did for your health ever

If you feel yourself slipping check with your doc if there are any programs available for you. In NY we have free programs that people can call and/or go to meetings to help kill the cravings as well.

I don't think I'd buy him the patches cause I've known people who smoked while using them (like you said) and also people who took them off, smoked, and then put them back on. The person really wants to have to quit in order to be successful. I used the Nicorette gum which worked really well for me, but it may not be the answer for everybody. You could try telling him you don't like his smoker's breath and you're tired of smelling like smoke even though you don't smoke. Unfortunately, if he's really stressed at this time I doubt he'll be very serious about quitting. Good luck though.

Thanks, that's why I haven't bought the patches. He tried the gum before, but likes the lozenges better (they helped him cut down but not quit). I've told him those things and many others, but it doesn't help. He doesn't smoke in the house or vehs or anywhere I am so that helps me. I guess I haven't said much to him cause I know he is stressed about other things right now, it's just that he was doing so well for a few months, then right back to smoking and I'm disappointed.
    Thanks for the input :).

I havent had a lung worm in almost 5 months and did it cold turkey. I did make a 100 dollar bet not to smoke for 6 months. No smoke is worth $100. I have had to cut way back on the booze to cut back cravings. Started to work out as well with helps me stay motivated to not smoke. Good luck and take it one day at a time.

Haha, yeah but he was a smoker when we started dating, so that is something I agreed to deal with, I couldn't leave him for that and he knows it. I don't even want to mention how bad it was over our NYE vacation weekend :(....from 1 or 2 every few days to 7 packs in 5 days . Guess I'm giving up on trying to help him quit.

    How's it coming for you?

It's going good for me. I almost forgot about this thread which just shows ya how much I think of it... lol

I've been smoke free for 3 weeks and 1 day -- doing well. The family in PA smoking ALL OF THE TIME wasn't too bad to deal with. I find I get cravings at the oddest times. At this point it's all mental, so I'm confident I can continue to deal with any weird craving with a piece of gum and the support of my wife & co-workers... (and my TW buddies :D)

I really want to help him quit, guess I'll just have to pick my battles and try something new.

lol... I tell my wife to pick her battles... :D

Quitting has to be a personal choice -- and you need to be ready to do it. If he's not ready, he won't quit.
