2.4 2RZFE running lean. Has a strange stumble when cruising, as in occasionally it'll just lose power for a few seconds then go back to running normal.
    Did the following;
Pulled plugs and checked the gap, it was around 40 set them to about 36.
Pulled line off Fuel Pressure Regulator and covered hole, nothing happened.
    Swapped out plug wires.
Poured in a bottle of seafoam.
Out of ideas and almost broke, need help, badly.

I've seen the intake pipe crack or even missing one of the ducts on the 2.4, take a good look at it.

I don't see MAF sensor mentioned.

FPR you just increased the pressure by about 8psi by removing the hose, doesn't mean anything fyi

How did you determine lean? Idle ok? Just had an issue with intermittent EGR sticking on my 2.7l manual, no cel. Simple.

Doesn't idle okay, it surges. Especially when the heat is going.

Picture of MAF sensor and intake hoses. No cracks or leaks there.
Also, forgot to mention, oil smells like there's gas in it.

Okay. Now, it doesn't run lean. I did a fuel filter relocation, due to breaking a fuel line. https://www.tacomaworld.com/posts/30389265/ This was the original post that gave me the idea. I mean, about 20 bucks compared to about 160ish for one meant for a 3RZ? Yeah...

Right now it has a seriously weird problem. It idles up like crazy. No tac, so I'm not sure how high. However... Occasionally it'll act fine but not at idle.

Well, if you got a good fuel filter, and good fuel pressure, there is an air leak somewhere.

Chlorinated brake cleaner test in your future!
    While engine running
Spray the BC over intake tubes/V hoses/injectors
If engine surges, there is your intake leak

(Could be brittle plastic injector cups)

That MAF has seen better days. It's worth a can of maf/electrics cleaner and you'll see how much crap is built up.

It's running, it's not right but it's running right now. I've tightened down all the nuts and bolts for the egr valve and throttle body, that was the leak.

As for the maf, thanks for the tip of cleaning it. I'll do that and another spray brake clean test next.

Update - Brake clean spray test didn't do anything. But now it's doing what it used to, occasional misfire and having no power for several seconds when holding the gas pedal steady. But now it's more often.

Hmm. Sticky injector? Can you find anyone locally to clean and test your injectors?

Nope. If it can't go to a dealership, smacked with a hammer to be fixed or have random gunk thrown into it then it can't be fixed by local 'mechanics'.

PS. Sorry, if it seemed like I had an attitude. I don't trust local shops at all due to all of them being scams, over priced, and ran by absolute idiots. So... Pray you never breakdown in Sumter, SC. YOU'LL GET STUCK HERE.

Lots of things remained un-answered, your "surge" could be a misfire...
you have multiple things going on & make no sense...
Even if it was lean, it will throw a CEL....
did you do a rhythm test, crank engine without starting & listen for even cranking rhythm?
If theres a fast spot, you have low compression in a hole...

You need to look at #'s & data, not just guess & toss parts at it...

As straight forward as I can put it. At idle, runs fun. No problems. When driving, on occasion, it'll feel like there's just no power whatsoever for a second or two then return to running okay. And yes, I've cranked it without fuel. It sounds even.
Spark plugs are grey. I've sprayed every single surface and hose with flammable fluid, no change in anything. Pulled EGR valve and cleaned it. Cleaned throttle body. Cleaned intake manifold. Replaced fuel filter.
