    Yeah that, or maybe for looks.

    Some people don't like the look of the AC next to the house.

    Not me.
    I'm purely about function.
    Stick it right next to the house if it cost less and works the same.....

    I'd never "fit in" in a rich neighborhood.
    I'd hang a window AC in the front window.
    I could careless about the looks.

    I've seen this a few times over the years, it's usually a noise thing. Not really necessary nowadays, but it is a frustrating thing spending 20 minutes hiking from the condenser back to the thermostat/furnace lol.

    Same, if it performs the function best then IDGAF about aesthetics.

    I had an appointment at the dermatologist today, I mentioned that I scrap stuff as a side hustle, and my doctor told me that he had two nonfunctional minifridges and a water cooler collecting dust in the basement…

    @Lt. Dangle

    I’ve been seeing this skin doctor since 2007, and the practice operates out of a 1950s ranch house that was zoned commercial. The house has always had oil baseboard heat, though the original boiler is long gone.

    I have no idea if the house originally had central A/C, but the place had a 1986 Carrier Round One that was there when my doctor bought the property. This was still in operation when I started seeing him; I forget exactly what happened (either the compressor failed or the unit just had a really bad freon leak), but in 2010 the Carrier had to be replaced. My doctor knew that I knew a lot about HVAC. He told me that he planned to buy a Trane; I told him that Trane was good, and he bought the Trane XR15 seen on the right. More than 15 years later, the Trane is still going strong!

    Oil heats efficiently, but the oil itself is expensive, and heat pumps are actually cheaper to run when it’s above freezing. The Trane is not a heat pump. The building has also been divided to make more exam rooms, and the central air doesn’t operate as efficiently as it would in the house’s original configuration. The Mitsubishi ductless heat pump was added in the last five years or so, with an indoor unit in every exam room to take some of the load off the Trane in the summer. The heat pump is also cheaper to run than the oil heat in some cases as well…

    I’ve never heard of this brand of refrigerator, but it was made in Japan (as opposed to China or Mexico), so that would indicate that it is of a higher quality than comparable fridges today. It used R-12, so that would mean it’s older than 1994, and the fact that it’s brown with a fake wood appliqué on the door would mean that it’s probably at least as old as I am. I was under the impression that neither fridge worked, and this one had no freon in it…

    I did not know until recently that chilled water dispensers had compressors in them; I actually thought that
    HFL11Y-1 was another type of refrigerant I’d never heard of, until I looked closer and saw “R134a”. I have no idea if this thing worked, but was kinda dirty and my doctor wanted it gone, so it’s going to appliance heaven…

    This is the compressor from Juliette fridge. Every fridge that I’ve taken apart move the last year and a half or so, regardless of size, has had an oval-shaped reciprocating compressor. This compressor is more circular, which would indicate that it is not a recip; I don’t think I’ve ever seen one like this. Any idea what type it is?!?!
