I can see the finish line (no pun intended!)

Fabed up the single post for the desk yesterday. 4x4 walnut attached to two whiskey barrel staves at the floor and a mounting plate for the top. The grain in this is so nice I really didn't want to cut into it.
    20241210_160624.jpg 20241210_160629.jpg

First coat of satin poly applied. I'll probably go back and sand with a 400 or 600 between coats just in case I missed a drop or a run.

Adjustable feet, bolts, and threaded inserts arrive tomorrow. I have to glue a couple mounting plates to.the bottom of the desk for attachment points as the desk itself is too thin. And the the monitor stand / keyboard garage. Hopefully this weekend it's in my office.

I love the use of woodworking joints instead of screws (except where they can be hidden). My 15 ft and angled at 70 degrees (3 parts for moving) desk is 2x4s and pine plywood because of the cost of good woods, AND because as you said "The grain in this is so nice I really didn't want to cut into it". Screw heads everywhere but at least an open-footprint so I can slide my feet anywhere underneath.

I await the final product ...

This is my first venture into a large project with such nice woods. I was able to get some walnut in the desk top from my dads shop when I cleaned it out. We have a hardwood mill nearby and the post was in the cut off pile. A neighbor gave me the hickory and the white oak I used for the outdoor side table. So far I've been fortunate in my scrounging.

And I agree 100% on the joinery. I hate seeing screws and nails (especially pin nails!) in what would otherwise be a nice project. I hope to start practicing more on hand cutting and chisel work. I'm just not set up with a decent work bench right now. Very few clamping options on my cobbled together work area.

I want to see the finished product as well. I have a folding side table for a desk right now.

This is my desk and a shelf fit to the angled wall. Works, but by no means pretty. Prettier is the mini-desk that fits on the slide-drawer (smooth side for writing, semi-grippy for the keyboard/mouse) ... "whiteboard" from Lowes.

I had a similar setup in our basement in MI. Straight along a 12 ft wall, TV, stereo, computer, and writing space. Recycled an old desk and added on with plywood and 2x4s. Do what works.

Took the day off of work due to an anticipated freight delivery.

Made some friends on the bandsaw while waiting.

Got this far. Waiting for a straight edge to arrive so I can do final adjustments and power it up.

I made a mistake in reading my measurements. I took the width of the desk for its depth. More disappointed than upset.
    20241212_223047.jpg

Two solutions. Cut the shelf and bottom brace, clean out the frame and keep the original plan. Or split the 4x4 in half, add a support block below the staves and turn the shelf frame to the back. That puts the computer out of easy reach and creates a need to hide the wires. I think this may be the path after I check whether or not I have the leg room.

A preview of what the finished top should look like.

That is very frustrating to say the least. It reminds me of the time that I installed the shelves at different heights on my “matching” bedside tables.

I hope that you can work it out and still be happy with the final outcome.
