Apparently Phoenix to Tucson is getting re-connected with rail and its in the 'planning' phase. So best case I imagine in 20 years I'll be able to ride a train down there, down a rail line that is physically already there

But hey the i10 will finish being expanded to 16 lanes this year

When i grew up in houston they ripped out a perfectly good rail line parallel to I-10, which was also adjacent to existing park n rides and bus depots, in order to expand to 24 lanes.

And to nobodies surprise, the traffic still sucks.

    Welp, it's healthy. That's something.
So funny. They just ripped a bunch of rail out north of here and are converting it to a bike trail.

Sometimes when they do that the RR still owns the land and put track back in if it ever becomes useful again. They call it "railbanking"

That's interesting. I did read they made 1.5mil selling the ties, rails etc to Bolivia and is being used in their railways, so at least it wasn't scrapped. The steel was made in the late 1800s.

Nice. Amazing they even sold the ties, those things get really beat up.

For a while old steel like that was really valuable for making precision radiation detectors. After all the atomic bomb testing, new steel was all slightly more radioactive.

Oh wow that's fascinating. I've heard people say that steel was the best quality in general that the country made. So cool how it was reused for that sort of precision work.

Idk if you saw my other posts but my coworker happens to be selling her 07 Corolla. The shop said the trans fluid was dirty and the timing chain tensioner o ring needed replacing so I’m gonna try to talk her down to 2k even.

    You know I hadn't considered @01x4 suggestion

A bike is cheap to own and maintain, and super easy to work on

Plus gas mileage is ridiculously awesome

Definitely economical. If you're in a pinch and okay with two wheels, seems like something to consider right?
    Or bus fare I guess.
