Saw this thread pop up on the main page figured id poke my head back in here. Recently got back into the RC crawler realm. Sold off the bomber as it was NEVER anywhere close to as good of a crawler as my two decades old TLT build (check my first post in this thread) but kept the Fusion SE 1800kv and Promodler bitchin servo to build a proper crawler.

ALIEXPRESS FTW. Essentially a copy of a G-shot v4 chassis, Dlux portal trans, aluminum capra portal axles with offset front pumpkin (similar to vanquish). Chassis, trans, axles and links (running FS chassis rear links for longer wheelbase ~13.5in) were like 200$. Another 200 in proper tires (1.9 ruptures), 3d printed inserts, injora stamped beadlocks, brass portal covers, Traxxas ultra shocks (cus they are cheap and work well) and various hardware etc.

I have some crawler buddies that were giving me crap for going the "cheap" route.... So i went ya know what I dont like any of the cab only crawler bodies and I wanna troll em. 20$ Traxxas bandit body and wing FTW.

This thing crawls AMAZING, it literally laughs at things my bomber struggled on.

Still tuning things and whatnot but I have a pretty good grasp on crawler things to make it run well out of the box.

Does anyone ever get points or rewards thru their Amain account? I've been a silver member for years now and don't recall ever getting anything back. I checked and there is like 347 points but no cash credit.

The AX24 gets a loooot of hate from the hardcore SCX24 guys but I love mine

No it's not a comp-level rig out of the box but a few minor mods (esp googly eyes) and it's a damn good time. 4WS at this price and with this level of simplicity really makes it fun and easy to use.

I grabbed the eBay capra aluminum portal axles and put them under a tube buggy build. I got it operational but need to find someone who will print vinyl for my body panels then clean up the wiring. I also put a hydro steer setup on them instead of a tie rod.

So far I've been happy (about a battery is all I've been able to drive it though)
    17341517641808523443546176195508.jpg

I also grabbed the eBay omf in 2.2 wheels for this build. But I may have splurged elsewhere.

    I
Almost grabbed one of these but then the scx24 deadbolt dropped and the scxpro kit dropped... I should have grabbed one on these too.

Wouldn't be surprised to see them at $79.99 next year like they've been discounting the Deadbolts since they're getting "old" in micro crawler years

Anyone have any recommendations for a decent R/C offroad vehicle for kids? I am looking at getting each of my kids a decent R/C for Christmas that can go through rocks, dirt, and some light water maybe. Looking to keep to cost under $150 each. I've looked on Reddit and YT for reviews but most are higher end hobbist custom built type stuff. I just want something that is better than cheap walmarrt stuff that can actually work off pavement and concrete. TIA

    4 run, 2 don't
    @cynicalrider I believe runs a Traxxas TRX-4M for himself and/or kid.

If it were me, I'd go that route or get them an FMS FCX24, FCX18 (got myself one recently), or an Axial SCX24.

All of them have models within your price range.

I can't recommend the redcat danchee ridgerock enough for the price. Super flexy, 4WS, and reasonably water resistant. Got one a while back and it has given me 0 issues. It also outperforms other rigs I've used like the scx10, trx4, and vs410 granted it's a buggy so kind of comparing apples to oranges. My only complaint was the tires left a little to be desired, but since the wheels are beadlocks you can swap them out later. For a kid though, they probably wouldn't care.

Another vote for the FMS FCX24 lineup. They do very well outdoors and are small enough for in the house. IPX4 rated, so they can take a splash.

Do you want it to be a rock crawler or something that's fast / for bashing around?

I was going to ask the same question

Can’t go wrong with an arrma grom (typhoon or Mojave) if you want something with some speed that is kid friendly. Retail is around $140.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! That is all very helpful. Looking into this as a first timer has been pretty overwhelming to wrap my head around all the options.
I'll definitely be researching all of these great options now that I have a sense of direction.

@Roody I was thinking a rock crawler would be ideal depending on how fast some of them get up to. I don't think they need something that ripping around at 30mph taking out ankles.

Nice!!! I have an 81 280ZX sitting in the garage that's seen better days. Bought it in 95. Hopefully one of these days I'll make it a priority and put some money into it. Other things just keep pushing it down the list. Had plenty of "if you ever sell it here's my number" offers but it's one of those situations of it's worth more to me than it's actually worth, lol
