    Hi guys,
Got a 2000 Tacoma 5 spd 2.7L ext cab a few months ago with 60k miles, and have been experiencing some pretty bad vibration when starting and shifting. The previous owner said they replaced the clutch not long ago due to issues (which ended up being the slave cylinder) but when they replaced it they mated a new friction disc to a used flywheel. Recently, it's become bad to the point of when I am stopped, it's difficult to shift it into 1st (This is why I believe it's not fully disengaging). Do you guys have any recommendations for flywheels and pressure plates? I have been looking at Exedy and OEM replacements.

Sounds like they boned the clutch install. If it's clutch crapped out at 60K that flywheel might be pretty tore up, so that may be the issue, but could be a few things combined to make it crappy. I would get the flywheel resurfaced and install an OE clutch. The OE clutches can go 300K on these. In the meantime it might be worth bleeding the brake line, sounds like the clutch may not be releasing completely.

    Agree with Madnachos
    OEM 100%

I had a “performance” (meh) ACT clutch assembly last 19k miles before
    Never again

I am curious if the transmission for the 2.7 has a pilot bearing or not?

I haven't changed one on these so I can't be certain, but I haven't worked on a Japanese car made in the last 50 years that didn't.

A new clutch and flywheel isn't that expensive. Labor is. And whoever changed the clutch may have hammered the pilot bearing when trying to get the splines lines up. Sounds like crap wrenching.

When that original pilot bearing starts seizing and grinding a groove on that tranny input shaft tip then the cost jumps $2000, which evidently was what the odd noise I had been having for a number of months that was undiagnosable until it was all taken apart

Ahh, that will do it, although it seems odd that a grove in the shaft would warrant replacement. Cleaning it up or welding it then cleaning it up should have been fine.
