I mean the ECU is going to be the most important. There's not much you can do to isolate it however. I suppose you could put a Faraday cage around it

I'm thinking to buy and protect a correct backup for the ECM. Want input on other electrical components that need similar backup/protection and replacement for EMP.
ECM seems obvious. Relays, fuses, other essential solid state components??
    Thx

There are some uninformed statements being made but that's to be expected.

Glad the op had the balls to ask questions. Many if not most informed people can see modern warfare as such a possibility if not probability.

The more one eyes are open to digest a few facts on EMP, lets just say "lightning high voltage strikes" the less sarcastic and vocal they need to be.

OP's post is simply a curious one.

7.3 idi is a great diesel but still alot of electronics to fry on a high voltage, lets call it a "lightning strike". A mechanical IDI diesel (early Mercedes, MKI MKII VW non TDI diesel, non U.S. early Toyota, Mitsubishi diesel will run off its own old oil.

A basic relay is still susceptible to destruction.

The only possible protection I can fathom is totally isolating your entire electrical system from the body of the vehicle, and wrapping every component in a dielectric/air gap, fully enclosed in another isolated frame (such as a Faraday cage), and grounding that. A theoretical EMP would hit the chassis and induce it's own eddy currents, which would hopefully block a high level of the initial pulse before re-radiating its own, to where your cage would "absorb" it. Think of it as air locks.

    You're chasing fairies here.

Man, I cannot think of anything critical on my FORD IDI that would prevent it from running in the event of a lightning strike, other than glow plugs. Mechanical fuel pump, injector pump, etc. course the gauges would fry.

    Lots to digest.
My limited understanding is most high voltage components (ignition coils, spark plugs, battery/cable, etc.) are rugged enough. Low voltage solid state devices (SSDs) are sensitive to voltage surges and will fail.
Thought is to find new or used critical sensitive components to protect and replace. Hoping I can get a list of such components from informed blog members to see how feasible this is.
    E.g.:
ECM, voltage regulator, relays, spare fuses.
Any other known critical SSDs? Anything in the distributor? ABS sensors? Don't care about radio, gauges, etc. Only items that would prevent running.
    Thanks!

High pressure injection pump being electronic is susceptible? The VW TDI can go hammer and anvil mechanical high pressure injector pump by a hybrid pump (mTDI). Mercedes fuel cutoff can be manually switched as can be a modified electro magnetic type switch used on many others. The IDI is ideal as it isn't near a finicky to super heated water and other alternative fuels

Anything connected to 12v is susceptible. Some might be good up to 18 or 24 volts even, but that wont be enough.

Yes. Faraday bags and old microwaves.

Meant to say Faraday bags INSIDE old microwaves.
