I'd paint it a light metallic grey, to make it look like raw steel then add light brush streaks of black or other greys to make it look weathered and worn

I like it. I was leaning towards very light coats of silver/grey. That way as the paint gets scuffed it would reveal the original under color as If it was rust

    Agreed.
Cast Blast, in a rattle can. I have always liked the color of it on a transmission/t-case or any exposed steel of sorts. To me, it looks damn good.

My son is turning 5 tomorrow and wants a RC truck. My wife wants to get him a $70 one off of Amazon but I went down the rabbit hole. It must be purchased on Amazon, we have a lot of gift cards. Was looking into the arrma Grom Granite but have been reading a lot about the diffs blowing out. Tried to talk him into a Grom Mojave but he wants more of a monster truck. Any ideas for the $150 price range?

If you stay with the brushed setup the diffs should be fine.

For a 5 year old, I doubt he's going to be breaking diffs. There's more of a chance of breaking things like the front control arms or more in the event of a crash.

Many of these RCs are too fast for even adults to handle.

I second the vote for getting the kid a crawler like the SCX24 or similar.

IMO the brushed Groms are pretty manageable, and they have different power modes you can easily switch on the transmitter to slow it down.
