I've read conflicting information online so wanted to make a separate post about this to add additional info for anyone else out there attempting this swap. So I have read that you can swap an Auto Transmission J shift case in the place of a Manual Transmission E-Shift case, but conflicting information arrives when it comes to input shaft lengths.

I so happen to have an Auto J shifter our of an ADD Auto transmission Tacoma [2000], and an E-Shift with ADD out of a Manual transmission Tacoma [2004]
Shafts are different lengths, but bolt pattern is the same as far as bolting up to the Auto/Manual transmission. The electronic shifter shaft is about 8mm longer than the J shifter shaft. What exactly needs to be done to make this swap work? I know it can happen, just seeing information that is all over the place depending on which forum post you look at. Anyone done this before and have any insight? Does input shaft need to be swapped or can I use as is? I know there is wiring to be done if the J shifter will take place of the E-Shifter, but also a bit confused on what exact wiring will be needed.

What’s an auto j-shift and e-shift? Assuming you’re referring to a j-pattern case and push button case.

So you’re going from a j-pattern case to a push button 4wd h/l case? Or is it the other way around?

are both case v6 because 4cyl are 26s and v6 are 23s and will not interchange without input swap.

Going from a Manual transmission push button case to an automatic transmission J shift case. Both trucks are V6.

If both are v6 - 23s, IIRC, all you need to do swap the coupler to the correct length. The folks I know who swap from push button to j-patter case will change their spindle, clamshell tube, and cv axle. One option you have is the hose clamp mod to the ADD tube.

As for wiring, I have no clue. When I did mine, I made it more than it needs to be because I wanted the 4wd light indicator to be on when its in 4wd. I use both the tcase and clamshell actuator as stand alone unit and ran an older Toyota reverse light switch to the 4wd shift rail to engage the push button 4wd. The reverse light complete the circuit and engages the actuator.

I can check input shaft lengths I have a couple from an auto and manual. I'm fairly certain that the auto is a shorter input shaft which would mean you need to swap input shaft around (super easy if you don't loose the 4wd synchros when you split the case). If your truck is 01-04 and currently an electric shift you will have to jump the pins on the harness to trick the computer get the ADD to engage and the 4x4 light will still work. Maybe the same method would work for the earlier vacuum style but I do not know for sure.
