Side by side pictures of the spots I posted before, but using a digital microscope. Plus a couple more. The worst was there was a little flake of clear coat peeled up and I wiped it off with a chamois and that chip left an inch long scratch in the clear coat when i wiped it off.

Toyota paint took a huge shit since the 2nd gen, I resigned myself to the fact I will one day have to repaint my truck if it’s going to be my forever truck (I in fact did repaint my last 2nd gen taco before trading it in for my current 2nd gen taco)

Here is an update, not just the clear coat is coming off. I was power washing it a little while ago and the paint started coming off. In the reflection of the carwash lights I could see that the paint is thin along all of the lines in the hood. Everybody go somewhere at night under bright lights and look at the reflection on the ridges on your hood. Look for thin spots.

I repainted my 2nd Gen 209 Black Sand Pearl when I swapped the 2005-2011 front to a 2012-2015 front. I love that color I wish it was available on the 3rd gens.

Thank God for dash cams! I just pulled the video from my dash cam and it shows the power washer blowing the paint off of my hood. The dealership can't say it was from another source!!!

    Buy a dash cam!

Update, tried another dealership, the service manager referred my case to I believe he said the Toyota Gulf States area investigator or something like that.

Side note, when we were walking from his office to my truck he was pessimistic, he let it slip, he said I have never heard of any complaints or issues with the black 2023 Tacomas only the 2022's....

So I'm guessing Toyota is already aware or noticing that there are issues with the black paint on 2022's so keep an eye on yours

Another update, on the 16th the Gulf States Toyota inspector is coming to town to check out my truck. fingers crossed that he won't be like everyone else at Toyota so far and say there is nothing wrong.

Another update. Preparing for my meeting Monday with the Gulf States rep, I took it to 3 of the best auto paint shops in the area. They all said the EXACT same thing. All of these white pin hole spots in the paint are from a mistake at the factory. They explained it to me in detail, I understood about half of the technical details, but this is what they all said happened.

With the type of priming Toyota uses, once the truck is primed there is a short amount of time that the paint must be applied or corrosion starts to set in.

All of the little "pinholes" in the paint is from the corrosion under the paint.

I attached a couple of pictures of the bed on the driver's side. I just completely washed and cleaned the surface. More pinholes showing up on the bed. One problem is it's hard to see the pinholes in the daylight. I'll keep everyone posted as to what the Gulf States rep says.

I was washing my truck getting ready to show it to Toyota tomorrow. I was using my garden hose to spray it down and paint on rear bumper started flaking off.

Toyota is only going to pay to repaint the hood a fix the rear bumper. They are still claiming the damage to the roof is from outside sources, even though the spots are identical to the spots on the hood

Center console divider thingy, rubber bed mat and side steps for the wife.
It was around $2k which included pulling the shark fin and rear HMSL, which was replaced with a new one that is supposed to be an upgrade and no silicone/bezel needed any longer. Full prep and color/clear respray. The new clear looks so much deeper than the factory.

No issues on my quicksand 2019. But it only has 28kmi so far, has rhino liner on the roof, and lives in a garage.

This is why I rarely use chemicals on my vehicles. Most washes are pressure rinse only.

My 16 has flaking on the doors and rear bedsides. Took it to Toyota and they told me it just needed a polish which it obviously doesn’t as the clear coat it flaking off. I mentioned the white paint recall and asked if they would cover it and said absolutely not before quoting me $600 for a paint correction. My truck had under 100k km on it at the time and was in extremely good cosmetic and mechanical condition and the advisor I spoke to basically laughed at me when I suggested that this wasn’t regular wear and tear on the paint

Don't give up, try another dealership or find out who your Toyota Regional Inspector is. Maybe try calling Toyota and open a ticket and get a reference number before trying another dealership. It was a pain in the a$$ and took months and trying a couple dealerships to find a service manager that would listen. I also showed up with estimates for repairs and statements explaining exactly how the damage is a factory defect from 3 of the most reputable shops in the area. Without me saying anything, each shop came to the same conclusion. The factory waited too long to apply the paint after the primer and moisture accumulated on the primer so the paint is not adhering. They all said in a few years pretty much all the paint is going to fail. So I guess I'll have to start new claims for each body panel as we go :(

Do not let the dealership do their polish procedure it will make it worse!!! They tried that on my hood first.

So far they only admitted that the paint on the hood and rear bumper was defective from the factory.

Look for spots that look like there are groups of what looks and feels like tiny pinholes. That for sure means factory defect. That's what convinced the Toyota inspector on my hood. The roof and bedsides have the same little pinholes but not as many as the hood yet.

Don't give up, try to go to the dealership where the truck was originally purchased.

To completely strip the hood to the metal and repaint and paint the bumper all the estimates are around $3,000.

Toyota approved the work, I'm still in the process of getting it done.

    I'll keep you guys updated.
