My Taco 3rd Gen Engine keeps dying for 1/2 sec when hitting rev limiter on 2WD,4H,4L

    Hello Tacoma community,

All 3rd Gen Tacoma seem to have sort of Engine Protection or possibly Emission compliant settings as part of the ECU. The RPM keep bouncing back when I reach the defined RPM Rev limit using my VFTuner Kit i.e. 6000,5800 or 5600, It cuts off for 1 or 2 seconds then disconnect the throttle until the RPM is down then the Throttle is connected again. I wanted to disable this ugly setting so when I reach the RPM limit, I wanted it to keep the fuel cut off as long as i'm throttling without any disconnection pretty much like 2nd Gen Tacoma.

Here's the 2 attempts I did on my calibration file using VFTuner without any success

    Attempt #1:

RPM Limiter Engage Timer "Value = 0"
RPM Limiter Engage Timer 2 "Value = 0"
RPM Limiter Fuel Cut "Value = 5800"
RPM Limiter Fuel Cut 2 "Value = 5800"

    Attempt #2:

RPM Limiter Engage Timer "Value = 51199.21"
RPM Limiter Engage Timer 2 "Value = 51199.21"
RPM Limiter Fuel Cut "Value = 5600"
RPM Limiter Fuel Cut 2 "Value = 5600"

Does anyone know how to overcome this limitation please using VFTuner software? Do I simply need to increase the Limiter Fuel Cut value to a number beyond the default of 6300 ?

PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME TO DISABLE TRACTION OR ANY OTHER SETTINGS :), this issue is being experienced while I'm 2WD, 4H, 4L (with or without switching to S mode)

    Thanking you
    Hani

It would be cool if you could figure this out because I hate how mine does this too. After the stuck pedal incident/lawsuit in 2009 Toyota started doing all kinds of safety features that would prevent stuck pedal fatalities, like the “smart stop” where it doesn’t allow the gas and brake to be applied at the same time and probably this rev limiter feature too
I know you said don’t suggest anything tcs related but have you tried the pedal dance? Ive confirmed that it does indeed work for the third gen, (the sequence pasted below lit up my dash) but I’m not sure if it disables the rev limited thing you’re talking aboutIMG_4074.pngi heard this technician diagnostic mode will disable anything traction and safety related
I also had a suspicion that something as simple as a throttle controller like a pedal commander would bypass it. I saw a video of a guy in a 3rd gen hammering the limiter and it wasn’t bogging down at all and he had a pedal commander

Trac off and VSC are not relevant to what im referring to at all. Please, if you haven't tested Tacoma 3rd behavior when reaching the cut off limit, do not reply with any suggestion. Again, I wanted my 3rd Gen Taco to behave pretty much like 2nd Gen when reaching the cut off limit so as long as the throttle is on, I want the cut off to remain active without disconnect after 1/2 second which's a protection that Toyota built as part of the stock ECU. Here's an attached short video for more insight of the cut off behavior issue and my VFTuner snapshot of the limiter. I'm quite sure the professional tuner will be able to advise about the VFTuner tunable parameter to overcome this issue. Simply extract the compressed .zip file to get the snapshot and short video Thanks all

I’m curious why you would ever run an engine up that high. I’m sure I’ve never come close to hitting the rev limit on any car I’ve ever driven.

Possibly yes but not without proper rev limiter without throttle disconnect

Did you even read the second part of what I said where I suggested a throttle controller? Best of luck with this anyhow, I guarantee you this isn’t the best forum to be asking about this as TW is mostly folks who like to baby their trucks, keep their trucks stock, and advocate against doing anything to cause damage or modify trucks in anyway that could cause damage, and disabling an engine rev limiting safety feature is exactly that.

    Thanks
Thank you! much appreciated. I'm still hoping a Tuning Pro will see my post and hopefully guide me with more insight on how to fix it. I'm quite optimistic it should be quite straight forward for a tuning Pro as I'm only Enthusiastic, I would like to have a hard fuel cut-off at my desired RPM limiter without disconnection. As many Taco owners know, Toyota Tacoma 3rd Gen is unlike 2nd Gen when reaching the cut-off limit. The 2nd Gen keeps cutting off as long as you are throttling however the 3rd Gen is protected so when it reaches the cut-off limit, it cuts-off for 1/2 sec then disconnects the gear or so!!! I ordered a VFTuner kit and installed the software and calibrated various parameters but it didn't change the behavior of the cut-off that I'm looking for.

There is a reason "cutoff" revolutions are labelled "red". I cannot recall the last time I redlined my Tacoma.

Sounds like you're hitting the rev limiter and I can't see why you need to rev that high in any circumstance. You're past maximum torque and horsepower when you get to redline, the ECU is just trying to preserve things by cutting spark so you don't create "inspection ports" in the engine block. The limiter is set at an rpm that allows for a safety margin. If you're trying to program an aftermarket ECU or retune your factory one to allow for higher rpms, you need to start thinking about a bottom-end build to handle it, plus valve springs that won't float under the higher rpm, or have a second engine on stand-by for when you blow this one up.

    This ^^^^^^^

I have seen the same action when going up incline on mud, traction breaks way and the rev limiter kicks in and stops all forward motion, and I agree, that sucks.

What's your intent with this tomfoolery? Do you monetize yourself breaking stuff on TikTok? Get your truck tuned and enjoy it. It's not a hotrod or a mud bogger.

OP, I see a blown engine happening here if it was possible to change the rev limiter the first time under load and the tires break loose you will over rev and well you know what will happen.

It sounds like to me you need to do an LS swap and build you an off road truck. If this is your daily driver leave it as is or you are going to be walking.
