It’s a known issue. Was driving me nuts so I decided to print out the TSB, take it to the dealer yesterday and have them drive it for themselves. They called me back and agreed it needs the parts associated with the TSB. They ordered them at no cost to me and are supposed to install them today.
In the online customer portal it shows a diagnosis fee of $205 and then a labor charge of another $205 for installation. What’s your thoughts on that? I figured if it were a known issue, it would be no charge and then they toss out the fees if the issue is confirmed. Like a warranty claim would be handled.
Do I have a case to argue that?
Second question……. Odds that this actually gets rid of the noise?

My dad had this done for free during the 3/36 warranty. Whine is 90% gone. I believe it was a body mount kit, right?

Is this worth bothering with? Hate to have to deal with the dealer and wasn't sure it would accomplish much but I havnt hit 36k yet.....

as far as the cost...it is up to them to determine if the TSB is applicable. should not cost you anything. if it did not work, they misdiagnosed. you are in 3yr/36,000mi warranty, right?

    from the TSB:

    Confirm the condition exists.
Does the vehicle exhibit a whine noise from the rear of the vehicle while driving around 50 mph (80 kph) at constant speed, slight acceleration, or slight deceleration?
     YES — Continue to step 2.
 NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.

Yes, I’m still under the 3/36. They are in discussions now amongst themselves on a rear diff replacement under power train warranty.

So the new TSB doesn't exclude any models but looking at the parts list it looks like the new damper and pad are what already comes on the TRD off-road. Can anyone confirm this? It seems like the solution to most 3rd gen recalls and TSBs has been to throw off-road parts at it. Guess we got the good stuff from the start!

This diagram is my source, the parts listed for off-road seem to be what they are specing in the TSB. The only thing missing would be the pillar pads. Interestingly the pillar pad is listed as a 2017-1018 part so I guess they dropped it as stock at the same time they dropped the drivers side bed cubby to cut costs.....

It's still going to do it after the new diff.

Wait until they finalize the bill, they most likely won't be charging you anything. Many dealers throw a diag line on the work order to get the ball rolling.

Why do you think it will still be whining after the new diff is installed? I gotta have them try it. Costs me nothing and the sound is super annoying!
With the upcoming holidays, I’m picking it back up and scheduling the work to be performed after Christmas.

Noisy diff is a characteristic of these trucks. The sound usually comes back and is sometimes worse after the replacement. My 15(2nd gen) 18 and 23 all do it.

    Well that sucks to hear……Literally!
I’m going to have them try it because if I don’t, I’ll be regretting not doing it because it so friggin loud and annoying.
Oh…. They dropped all of the other fees also. $0 invoice for today.

I brought my 22 Tacoma TRD SPORT DOUBLE CAB in today. They heard the whining and ordered the TSB parts. I will update after Christmas when I get the work done.

Brought mine back home while they order the new diff. The noise is still there, but instead of being from 55mph through 80 mph, it’s from 60-70 mph. Still obnoxious though.

My whining/ howl noise is constant between 70-80mph. Stops when I release the gas pedal.

it does have a faint whine at 50mph.

Yep.. whines under cruise or slight throttle. Completely silent as soon as I lift the throttle.

My OR whines when slightly on or off the throttle. I've had another vehicle do the same thing after a regear - I was told by the dealer to expect it as the higher gears you go the more of a possibility of noise.

I no longer hear it with MT tires on.

Many threads on this with various degrees of success. I had mine done in July and it’s 90% gone with stock wheels. I have heavier winter tires/slight lift and steelies on now. It’s 100% gone. This makes sense because it’s a harmonic vibration inherent to the design. Some assemblies are worse than others.
