51 here, even at that age and prior I had a good work ethic. Still do. But it seems rare. Those things you mentioned are the reason that more than one job I've had (mostly a small retail store and a building maintainence gig) I saw it take forever for people who generally sucked to be let go, and it was a bitch to train replacements..sometimes the new person was worse.

Both. The idea is to make us smarter and/or more efficient, be it as people or the things we use. Reality is it's also made people lazy or not pay attention, etc.

I always take my break/lunch time. Unless it were to behoove me not to do so.

I'm more in this camp, and definitely with paid time off.

I can understand people not wanting to bust ass for a job, especially if it's not a high paying one. But some people don't want to even show up on time or at all, stand around all day doing as little as possible, etc etc and then how dare anyone speak to them if so.

Used to be at my company you could accrue 8 sick days a year, no limit. They started capping at 15 days worth. I rarely take a sick day, 1-2 a year. Some people take almost all if not all of the 8 and for reasons like staying out too late, beach days, that stuff. One lady I worked with was famous for calling in on nice days midweek. She'd be white as a ghost before and lobster coloured the next day..hmmm. I will admit that this capping deincents me to be a trooper and I will pull a couple of days here and there in summertime to sit in my pool all day long, though my company has recently steered more towards it being "wellness" time so it's more allowed.

I ran into something like this 10 yrs ago, we couldn't carry vacation time anymore. I'd been voluntold to work on a project (which was above my pay grade as well) and one thing the management didn't tell us was there would be random times of the project for 4-8 weeks nobody could get a day off, period. I'd attempted to use time 4 times and been denied. End of year I have one week I have to use or lose and got "we'll try". I told them politely that having been denied 4 times that if I can't have the week off that I expect HR to either buy the week from me (not a standard practice) or give me dispensation to carry it, given that my repeated attempts to use it were refused. I

Can understand that, my uncle lived to work..it was his fulfillment in life, and hey that's good if that's what he wants.

I'm in a large company and sadly when these things happen either nothing is said , or if something changes it affects the whole when it was the handful that caused the issue..and said handful are never spoken to then either, even when it's clear to everyone who they are. I do agree every little thing isn't grounds for a whooping, but when it's enough things and enough times it hits a point something has to change.

That's just it, when I managed in any job I wasn't a hardass about things the first few times unless it was so bad I had no other choice.

If the day is bumping, and the task isn't wretched, I will forego a break. Otherwise, I take my State mandated 15min, or my unpaid lunch. Because there is no incentive to do otherwise.
Now, when I was cutting meat, that was a different story. My last butchery gig was by the half beef. So, you bet you ass I just sucked down a dart, ripped some coffee, took a quick leak, and headed back to work. By the hour doesn't mean sucking the companies balls.

lol... it wouldn't be a surprise!! OK...... tomorrow at 10:10am I drive to the dealership to put this thing to bed. Keep your fingers crossed all goes well. Very interesting talk with a Toyota corporate rep today about the whole process. It's an admitted shit show that where one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing. I'm going to bring a friend to keep me cordial and make it an f-bombless transaction.
