I had my rottie trained in 2 weeks to do her buisness outside. Dont be afraid to be harsh on them. never hit them on the but from the top always from the side it can hurt there spine. Tech all the basics first like training for the bathroom and not to chew jump or bite, when they eat make sure there not agressive and the same with toys. If you cover the basics you will have a great dog! Also let them be around other dogs and people.

Agreed. Also, for a dog to associate an action they did with the correction, it has to be done within 1.5 seconds. That's what all the trainers told me when I was training my two dogs.

Not hard, but that how they learn good from bad when young. When my dog used to growl with a toy she would get a tap n the nose. And when she would pee in the house she would be told in a deep tone no and then brought outside. She would get spanked for doing bad things like eating garbage. Again now hard bt enough to let them know what they did was bad.

when i was training my dog i'd spank her...but not hard...but only if i caught her doing something that she shouldnt such as chewing on my stuff or using the bathroom on my floor

i also would use a stern NO

as she got older i phased out spanking and now a simple NO suffices

Wow they do look exactly alike! My pup looks a little like them, but he is 9 years old now and I didn't have him as a pup. He is a mutt also. I'd love to have a puppy that looks like him.

    **UPDATE**

I took Karma to the vet for a checkup, just to make sure she healthy. As it turns out, little Karma has kennel cough (go figure), so I have to give her antibiotics every 12 hours. Other than a nasty cough, she seems fine. Still a busy body, eating a lot, and really playful. Oh, she's 15lbs.

We're starting to bond more, as I've tied the leash around me whenever I'm in the house haha, and she doesn't protest so much when I leave her sight. There are definently times when I get a bit frustrated, but I have to remember that she's a puppy, and I have to be patient. The messes in the house are at a minimum, about once a day (my fault for not reading her body language). I'm teaching her to be calm when the food is coming out, to wait by the door, and to shake. She has for the most part mastered sit.

This is such an incredible experience. I've owned kittens before, but never a puppy. They are (obviously) completely different. Thanks again for everything!! I'll update later on with more pics and whatnot to whomever is interested. :)

Congrats - very cute puppy. Mine are 3.5 and 3 now (boston terriers) and it's been a blast. Her kennel cough should clear up pretty quickly.

This is very true! My Connar always seems to know when I'm upset and lets me cry on him very patiently.

Of course, when I'm mad at someone at home, he heads for the hills just like everyone else... LOL!

Hope the cough leaves quickly, sounds like you are doing great.

Just to add another item that I have found great. An invisible pet containment fence.

We have almost 3 acres (including a pond and some woods) in the fence and our dogs have plenty of room to run and play. Ours are outdoor dogs, well they sleep in a heated garage with a doggy door:rolleyes: For a well trained inside dog you can put the collar on them when they go out and not worry about them venturing into the road or where they should not be.

Training is the key to these fences and they are very humane....you train them around the boundary and during the training phase you can allow enough correction to get an ear twitch.....no strong shocks allowed!!......they can work for any size yard up to 5 acres I think.

Note: they receive an audible tone well before they get to the correction stage, this reminds them to turn around and go back to the happy area...

There are many types and styles, and I must repeat, this system must be used by VERY responsible pet owners who will follow the training instructions to a 'T'....I put many hours in training our dogs and they have never gotten close enough to get any shock from the fence....they know that inside the flag area is the happy and fun place and no need to venture out...

The brand I bought is Innotek....here is a link:
    http://www.innotek.net/contain.shtml

Our Weims are so happy that they pet each other once and a while, look below..:D

    ***Update**

She's almost 5 months and now weights 23lbs. She's getting BIG, and still crazy. I found out that she's a Chinook! That took forever, but tigerfan00, I'm sure yours is too.

Anyway, she's mastered sit, shake, high five, lay down, and we're currently working on rollover. She's create trained and goes to sleep in there by herself, she's also potty trained, though I don't trust her 100% until she's older.

I will post updated pics shortly. btw, I don't know why this is bold but it's pissing me off..

Animals learn and react very well to pain. It's not about beating them, it's about having them realize what they did will cause pain and they learn to avoid it.

And the problem with this world is not enough parents beat their kids. Seriously, when you see your kid go smack them. Just cause you haven't seen them do something wrong doesn't mean they haven't when you weren't there. Keeps them on their toes.

I'm getting a puppy in a about a week and want to make sure I have everything covered. :) What are some of the essentials? From my research, here is what I have gathered.

    Kennel/Crate (Check)
    Food/Water Bowls
    Bed (blanket in the kennel?)
    Pet Insurance
    Food/treats/chew
    Brush
    Collar/leash/id tags/microchip
    Toys
    Books on training
    Clean up supplies for spills

Anything i'm missing? Also, what is good puppy food?

Forget about pet insurance. Its a waste of money if you take your dog in every year for a routine check up. Spend the money of good food (we use Iam's).

Don't ever forget..."your'e smarter than the dog!" If his conduct is unappreciated you will have to learn to speak dog and convince the new family member why they should not do the no no's! (Translated...teach them with love not violence)

    Spankings!

Putting things in corners for 15 minutes to think about what they've done is the reason why school shootings started.

Mum Cats and dogs will smack puppies and kittens upside the head if they're doing shit they're not supposed to.
