So was this pretty standard for the gen 2s or did I just get the lucky draw on a really bad set?

Based on the pics you sent that seems like a particularly bad set. That said, edge fitment has always been a bit of a toss up on those lights and other aftermarket offerings as well. I've sent a handful of warranty claims over the years for lights such as yours.
While we at Hotshot Offroad were part of the R&D process on a different model of these lights with the same DNA (4Runner XB EVO), we are not the manufacturer of them, nor do we have a direct stake in the production of these lamps. I am unable to speak on why these units are produced where they are vs a different location.

Mine are in en route!! Placed an order for black friday on the gen2 and I received the email saying they're upgrading them to the Evo's. Can't wait!!:bananadance::taco:
Already got my morimoto tails and 3rd brake light with flasher module installed. And these are gonna put it over the top! Idk if they're including the overdrive module or not but I'll have to get one if not.

Yeah they did the ol switcheroo on that! Folks that ordered normal Gen 2 amber DRL XBs got an immediate upgrade when supply ran out, and are actually getting theirs first! I think there were like 25 units that fell into that bucket so you can consider yourself darn lucky! Make sure to post up some pics once you get them in and installed.
No worries! I normally would be able to take a run at you still as we ship up to Canada a lot. That said, with the current state of the shipping strikes at the border I have been a bit... nervous... when I print out those Canada labels.

I know. I still have some packages in limbo that were shipped during that window though. I'm just a tad gun shy lol.

No specific reason to aside from personal preference. Toyota’s factory lights aren’t all made in Japan.

Evo are $1500, Hybrid are $1100, Supercharged Drivers are $150.

The XBs they replace were $1300 for White and $1500 for Amber.

I noticed something similar on past white vehicles—the clear edge almost exaggerates it.

Even if it was confirmed by 3D scan to be as good as stock fitment, the stock tolerances may leave room for improvement. That said, the Evos improve in every category I know of, fitment included. It’s a true evolution.

Here is OEM LED reflector vs XB Evo performance assessment.

Green is XB Evo per lamp road projection mapping in lux, Blue is OE LED reflector values
My assessment take consideration of how average driver will feel in relative illumination strength mapping in addition to absolute max reach. Distance zone illuminance is very important, high value factor, but also its visual impact is not as dominating as near field impression.
Feel full is also important comfort factor.

Tacoma OE LED reflector is one of the strongest optical design OE achieved, take full advantage of optically much more efficient principals
I very much admire it's potency. Only concern was thermal management, in matter of 15min, flux drops over 20% I think it's passive cooling.

I am sure this will be biggest question to be expected, Which lamp is better?
For those two comparison, really depend on what quality you look for in your lighting. Within regulation allowance on many test points, it was certainly very difficult lamp to compete.
In short summery, OE LED reflector and standard DOT driver XB Evo performance is about equality high performance, but in different way.

for low beam, Long range distance comfort, then certainly XB Evo, no question. About x2 the illuminance. If you look for near field width comfort, OE LED for sure, it has about x2 the illuminance compare to XB Evo
High beam, OE LED does good ground projection, but modest distance object above horizontal level illuminance. if you like to feel distance reach, XB Evo.

Balance, either of option gives strongly superior than many other LED optics available on market.
OE LED is on bit peaky to comfort performance side, feel great, but lack of low beam distance, high beam distance object illuminance capability makes overall as lamp system less "full circle" balance
XB Evo, very well balanced, I wish I could pack bit more width impression, but it's still plenty wide. Just OE LED reflector is that strong in width department.

How this number will look like from driver view? This is the kind of character difference you will see

Is it worth the upgrade from the XB 2 Amber DRL? I much prefer the look of the XB 2 but these are tempting.
