I've never seen that, I mean the spacer is pretty thick way thicker than the washer with ball.
I definitely think you'll gain some support using that dual row bearing. Worth it to machine down that spacer for it to sit in the adapter.
How's that input coupler that saw some heat? Put a straight edge and make sure it's not warped.

 

That's the plan as of now. I'll know more when I have the bearing in hand to test tomorrow.
I'm wondering if it's worth it to machine a pocket into the spacer as well for that detent ball


checked with a precision straight edge and nothing looks to be warped or OOS.

 

5209 bearing confirmed drop in replacement for the TG adapter other than machining down the spacer/washer to a new 7.67mm thickness. 11.2mm height difference between both bearings, so took that off the 18.87mm original thickness. Dunno why TG doesn't ship them like this to start, seems like a no-brainer.
Gotta do some cab sheet metal work, then time to find out if any other parts don't want to play nice.



Anyone got any tricks to keep the rad designs shifter from leaking out the sides? My rear case has always had a perpetual film of gear oil on it since install. Current thought is to pack it with grease and make an oil slinger plate.

 

Less oil.

I think this is just a generally accepted consequence of these cases. My marlin case puked out anything over about 1.5 quarts through the shifter. Seems like that's par for the course.

 

I know that's the case for the crawlbox, but it doesn't share oil with the rear case. That shifter goes onto the rear chain case and is the only one that pukes. I thought it would stop, but somehow hasn't for the last couple years

 

Ah...sorry wasn't reading carefully. Didn't realize you were talking about the rear case. I didn't have issues with the toyota case puking out the shifter, but I recall somewhere in this thread others have had that problem. I don't think I have a slinger, but dont really remember. I did use the same Right Stuff on the shifter that I used to seal up everything else.

For sealing, I have the same RAD shifter, scuff up both sealing surfaces and I always use black fipg. Sometimes a factory paper gasket in the mix helps too.

 

Hm that's what I had done as well. Black rtv on both sides of the metal gasket that goes between the shifter and case. Maybe I'll try loosing the gasket and see if that does anything.

 

Black RTV and black Toyota FIPG is not the same. The Toyota FIPG is light years better.

 

I’ve also found that no matter the substance, it’s best to let it setup for a few before torquing down the bolts. I think most even say to do that in the instructions.

 

I've always been under the assumption that black RTV really isn't for applications with gear oil. Toyota uses the black FIPG part #

00295-01281 is what is used on transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials.

Both the of the Toyota FIPG's are really good stuff!

 

I use

$10 Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker, 3 oz (Packaging May Vary)

Permatex 81182 gear oil rtv and don’t have any issue. I have no experience with Toyota black fipg

 

That's interesting to hear peoples experiences with different sealants. I've had good luck with whatever I use typically. I always clean the surfaces best I can before reapplication with ISO, wire brush, razor, etc. Last time around I used the permatex high torque RTV (grey color) on my cases and had zero issues with it.

This time around I'm using The Right Stuff since a lot of people seem to have good success with it. And the dispenser is a lot nicer to use.

 

This is a good part of setting up sealant. I use the black toyota fipg and you let it start to dry for a few minutes it will start to have a light grey tint and that's when I'll finishing tightening up. Expensive, but the amount a crawl box needs to be sealed, its worth it. The pink and orange fipg on the other hand havnt liked as much (used in the elements they were suppose to be).

 

what are the pink and orange fpig supposed to be used for?

 

orange is transmissions, or really anything that's metal on metal with ATF in it
black is anything with gear or engine oil
pink, im not sure, I never use that one

 

Pink was the old Orange for trans/atf. I bought some when I rebuilt my transmission. Didn't seal well at all.

 

I would be curious on what kind of testing they do to their sealants to determine which is correct for each application.
