I welded up the base frame for the tool chest today.

    20241213_145728.jpg

I used the tool chest as a jig to get everything tacked together,
Swivel casters with locks on all 4 corners. I am hoping tomorrow I can paint the base, and get this sitting upright on the casters. I still need to cut the top bottle bracket, and figure out something for cable management

    Frame base is painted.

    20241214_122738.jpg

I am pretty happy how it turned out, I may not even cut the bottle bracket like I had originally planned, I may just use the chains like I have it now. I still need to fill in the tray where the bottles sit, the current design allows for a bit more rocking then I want to see.

I am going to rob the the cable racks off of the old Vulcan carts and add them to this, they worked fairly well, an all I will need to do is add some nutserts to bolt them up to the tool chest.

I picked up a new tool to help finish building the welding tool cart.

    20241216_143149 (1).jpg

It came with a decent selection of anvils for it, an a small starter selection of rivnuts to go with it.

M6 Rivnuts where installed, I was a bit concerned that they would hit the drawers when closed, but it worked out that the location I used cleared the drawers.

    20241216_160512 (1).jpg

First of two sets that will get installed,

    20241216_161720.jpg

going to be a good thing this is on 4 swivel castors.

I hate how my hoods use different battery types; I've got tons of extras for the spare hood but not the fat 2450 the main hood uses

I know you've said this before - but I forgot. :( Who made your fab tables? Do you have wheels on them?

    You're good!

    PrimeWeld fixture tables.

Got pretty hooked up but even at retail they're worth it.

I have leveling casters on each leg but they come with beefy, adjustable feet at no extra cost. Casters are $25/ea?

    Thank you.

Looks nice and beefy. I really like the leveling casters.

Way more strength than I need, and extremely flat as well

I always liked making stuff out of metal but it's been a few years and I sold off my gear; mig, bandsaw and a tubing bender. I was toolless fab-wise aside from a grinder, some c clamps and a vice. I thought I'd share my ultra low budget minimalist fab setup that didn't break the bank but still got the job done.

Just to put on some perspective this was my last stick welding project, 51 years ago, since then I haven't touched a stick welder.

Back to tools, it was black friday to the rescue. Wasn't sure if we'll see some price drama in the coming next year I pulled the trigger now while it's still cheap.

Picked up a variable speed HF bandsaw and their holder; $200.
I used to own the HF Red floor standing model and I much prefer this one. Great for a small garage, not much noise and very little flying debris, it's no larger than a mitre saw and 2 bi-metal blades are only $17. I'm still on the first blade and I've put it to some good use.
    [IMG] [IMG]

Another cheap small garage solution that turned out great is the chinese inverter welder that's the size of a shoe box. 110/220V 130A stick welder $56 on BF from Amazon.

I threw in a cheap auto darkening helmet, rods, gloves and chipping hammer; another $50 on BF. The helmet kinda sucks but it works.

Is a $50 Chinese welder worth it? I was skeptical, I've spent more than that on a good buzz but I'd gamble the $50 to find out. I burnt a bunch of rods before really getting any half way decent welds (all on me) and still have a long way to go but this little $50 welder works like a charm once I used the right sized rods and found the sweet spot amp-wise for the material. When I'm done I just pick it up and place it on a shelf. It's stick holder and ground clamp were cheap junk so I replaced those after I decided the welder was worth it since they cost almost as much as the welder did but I improved my welds with those changes.

This is some .180 wall using 7018 rods on 220V/120A (after lots of practice on my part before I had something worth showing what the welder can do). I can live with these.

    Mission (almost) accomplished.

Digging the size of that thing!

What are the dimensions of the frame?

Thanks, it's basically a 4x8, 50" platform width so a 4x8 sheet of PW will lay flat with a couple inches hanging out the back. 4' tongue. 3500# axles, 215/75 R15 tires. I wanted a similar track and wheel base as the tacoma and it needed to fit a dirtbike in the back. My other requirement was it fit in half the garage along with 2 dirt bikes. This trailer is going to be a hybrid, the front half will have a roof top tent mounted on some uprights so it will be ether a utility, camping or MC hauler.

Since this is the anything welding thread, I'll share the last time I trashed my garage with mill scale, grinding debris, weld splatter and black dust.

Previous welding project back in '08.

My version of an enduro buggy, street legal, long range (300mi), a great stereo and a nice running stroker motor. The advent of side-by-sides made these obsolete and it wasn't very comfortable on longer drives so I let it go. Lots of work (and $$) went into it.

Now that I'm retired and old my fab endeavors lean towards less exciting things like utility trailers.

I finally finished my kart stand. Normally people have trouble carrying karts in all but the largest trucks. My 5' Tacoma bed can now carry 2 and be loaded with 1 person.

Welders have gotten so good in the last 5 years. I feel like a fool for spending $1100 on my 165amp DC only TIG.

The second cable rack has been added.

    20241219_134931.jpg

When I went to cut a piece of steel for the tank floor, I noticed what I planned on using was going to be too narrow due to a previous cutout, So I decided to use part of the old welding cart.

I was able to save the decal, that should create some confusion to those who see it later and do not know the details of the cart.

    20241221_162320.jpg

I ran out of rivet nuts before I could get the bottom safety chains added, but the cart is useable as is.

Fwi. I hates the sagging chain restraint for the can. The rattle and wobble bugged me something fierce.

I switched mine out to a web type cinch strap. She locked in tight and no rattle or wobble!

I gotta make something like this or another cart.

Picked up this tig for $130 but it didn’t come with most of the stuff it usually comes with. But $200 in I’ll be welding with a petal and that should hold me over til I can get a 225x

do you have a link to something similar? i don't at all like the chain either, but i'm also not entirely comfortable with a strap either, somehow i feel safer with a chain..
