Recently picked up a skid plate from the junk yard for $12. Trying to mount it now and noticed my old one was mounted to a hanger in front of the tank. The new one seems to mount to the tank itself does that sound correct ill put some photos up

    4 run, 2 don't
I would be that skid is for another model IE extended cab, assuming you have a single cab. Or I could be wrong and it's the same cab type, but a difference in engine/transmission combination.

Partsouq is a quick way to compare different parts between different models.

+1 to what @Kwikvette said, regular cabs have different mounts for the fuel tank and use a different skid plate design from extended or double cabs.

I looked and all models had the same parts. I found this sub assembly drawing just now. Shows the plate being mounted with nut and bolt to the holes on the gas tank. The bracket on my truck isnt even in it

Here's the relevant drawing from the 1998 factory service manual. Your is a little different--the filler neck and evap system changed over the years--but the mounting is probably the same or at least very similar. If you want to be extra sure, search around for a 2001-2004 FSM. There are PDFs floating around.

Pay special attention the annotation in the bottom-right--some parts are specific to Regular Cab and some are specific to Xtra Cab. Note that 2WD (5-lug) and 4WD (6-lug) also have some differences.

You could be right that the skid plate part number is the same (it's been a while since I messed with a fuel tank), but the mounting of the fuel tank and skid is definitely different.

Looking back at your first picture, I wonder if you got a 2WD/5-lug skid plate. 5-lug trucks had smaller gas tanks because of their reduced ground clearance, so also had shorter skid plates.

A 2WD 6-lug should match the 4WD parts of the diagram I posted.

I can't tell if you know this already, so just in case... 2WD usually means 5-lug and 4WD usually means 6-lug. The 5-lug and 6-lug chassis and suspension are entirely different. Even the bodies are slightly different (the 5-lug body has narrower fenders). Prerunners (2WD 6-lug) are basically a 4WD truck without the front drive shafts or transfer case.
