Found a limited 4WD for sale with only about 4K miles. Was in Missouri for the duration of single ownership. Frame seems fine but front end is questionable. Either way looking for second opinions. Would any of this deter y'all from buying it?

    thanks

Any unpainted/uncoated steel will show immediate signs of rust. Those parts won’t die of rust before all of us.

I see. I was wondering why some parts are more rusty than usual. No coating on certain parts is rather strange to me. Either way I'm sure I can buff them out a bit if I needed to. Thanks!

Most cars are like this. The unpainted part won't rust any substantial amount before the rest of the truck is in the scrap yard.

looks fine to me. Surface rust; can be mitigated with a lot of elbow grease and time if you like, but it's unlikely to cause you grief unless it progresses (e.g. you live in Michigan and bathe your truck in salt monthly). If you're satisfied with an explanation of why someone wants to sell a tacoma after 4K miles, I'd say go for it. Post with follow ups!

If the new truck sat on a dealer's lot for a year, it'll have similar levels of rust on the unpainted steel surfaces. Focus your attention elsewhere, typical used vehicle due dilligence. (Like why did previous owner get rid of it after 4k? Was it repo'd? Theft recovery? Collision damage?)

I find it on carmax. Vehicle history shows no issues but I'm having a mechanic look at it when possible.

here's the history in case anyone is interested https://www.carmax.com/car/26736301/vehicle-history

I'd guess this taco went on one trip to ski slopes, or somewhere where they use de-icing chemicals...

Still looks pretty good, but something kicked off the rust hard at some point.

Good but they better wash that salt off before it gets in

I would think it’s good to go if the price is right. DON’T overpay.

OP, don't let some surface rust on exposed cast iron freak you out. They are all built that way and they all look like that.

Have your mechanic look at it by all means, but visible surface rust on cast iron hubs is no reason to walk away from an otherwise sound used vehicle purchase.

Thanks for the replies. If the purchase of this truck goes well I plan on giving it a good wash with my power washer. I live in a dry state (OK) so I won't encounter much snow. Is there any reason I should wash the inside of the frames as well? If so how would I go about that

    Thanks!

I'd give it one woolwax treatment and this should do you for life in a dry climate. Especially inside the frames. I am in CA and did that - But I do run up to the mountains often!
One treatment lasts forever in dry climates.
