rear shock size?

    Hey guys i did some search and couldn't find what i was really lookin for even tho i just read a thread the other week on this.

    Anyways i am putting together my lift and this is what i have come up with.

    Wheeler 5 pack leafs
    5100 billys in the front, new bushings
    either eibach or OME 882s i can really decide, input would be more the welcome
    diff drop
    1.5'' shackles

    now my problem is my rear shock lenght. i kinda want to get 5150s but since my lift isnt huge 3''ish in the back, id be okay with the 10'' billys right? or should i get the 11.93'' ones?? sorry i just cant figure that one out..

    i know i had my heart set on them before! but now i am planning on getting an elite front bumper and idk how it would handle the extra weight..

    Electric Dynolock tailgate, TrailGear Slides, , 285/75-16 Yoko Geolanders on Wheelers Type B, SAW 2.0 front and back, Camburg b/j UCA, 1.5" AAL, Ubolt flip, ARB bump.
    I would use the shocks you got until everything is on.

    Once it's all together, go find something to 'flex out' on (loading ramp, large rock, articulation ramp, et.) Disconnect your shocks (it won't hurt anything, just don't go taking off before putting them back on) and 'flex' your truck out so that the dropped rear tire is off the ground, or damn close, then measure the distance between the top and bottom shock mount: this is your max length, getting anything shorter will just limit your 'droop', getting anything longer, well an inch longer ain't gonna hurt. (TWSS)

    Now measure the compressed side, where your rear tire is stuffed in the wheel-well. Again, measure the distance between the 2 shock mounts: any shock that is too long to compress to this length means you're going to mash your shock if you take a hard hit and possibly rupture/explode it, any shock that compresses shorter than this distance is good.

    Reinstall your old shocks, go home and start doing research.

    Now, find a shock that extends to your maximum length (little extra is good, too short is ok but that makes your shock the limiting factor in suspension articulation) and that will compress to as short or shorter than your compressed length.

    Make sure that you full 'flex out' the rear to get your full measurments. Hell, use a forklift to lift the rear tire if you got one.

    I suspect the eibachs will handle the added weight better than the OME's. As for the back, if you do end up with 3", a collapsed length of ~15" and an extended length of ~25" will be about right.

    ahhh yes! this is what i read the other week! thank you sir!

    ooo really? cuz the 10'' 5150s are 15.89'' collaspsed and 25.91'' extened...thats pretty close haha
    and i think that with the wheeler 5 pack and their 1.5'' shackles it'll be close to 3'' or more..
    and you think the eibachs will hold an elite plate bumper??

    who knows, maybe just a lot of people are actually running the wrong rear shocks??:notsure:

    The eibachs are a 650 lb coil so yes they will hold the weight of the bumper. :D

    One of the 2 but either way i know they are 600+ and if you look at alot of other coils they start at 220 and te highest i saw was a 500 i think.

    They are a higher poundage than most coils and IMO its better than say a 400# coil

    I'm basing my comments on what I saw with my truck.

    Using the methods that nvdeserted recommended, the flex numbers for my truck were compressed/extended passenger: 16.75/21.75, driver: 15.5/20.75. That is with Alcan 8 leafs with 2" of lift. If you add 1" of lift and still get all the way to the bumpstops, I would not want a compressed size of much more than 15", preferably less.

    Again, with my setup, the Elite bumper with winch added 130 lbs. The 650 lb eibachs used in my SAWs are easily handling the added weight.
