Sort of. Ash trees are all gone now due to the emerald ash borer. (They'll kill all of yours too.) Ash trees grow in groves, and there is a grove of dead ash trees across the road from us. We used to look out on live, green trees, now we look out on dead, broken trees. We also had to have 5 of them taken down in our yard before they fell and hit something expensive.

    But we have firewood.

that makes the last trip. Ill try to get it all split and stacked by next weekend (hopefully). Most of ours came from partial pulp decks near home. Looks like I’ll be heating the house at least two nights next week too.

Been heating the house with wood for almost 50 years. First thing I do after hunting season ends as long as there isn’t a shit load of snow is start dragging the logs down to buck up and split..35 feet long and 5 rows wide 5 foot high.always like to have extra..oak,maple,ash,beach and some elm

I had an Ashley wood burner way back in the day, worked great for around 15 years. Then I got a fisher papa bear that I used for quite a while but it was too big and made the house way too hot. Got rid of that one and picked up a Georgia stove works that I’ve had for a while, it works good but is showing its age.. I would say the fisher was the best performing stove but way too much heat for a 8 room home. I only use wood to heat my home nothing else. All stoves were purchased used but were in great shape at the time..probably in the next few years I’ll have to start looking for something different.. I’m 68 years old and im not sure how many more years I’ll be able to go out to the wood lot and harvest all my wood..time will tell

Vidman -good looking pile there -it reminds me of the pile I have. Tip for you -I cover mine the same way you do with one exception -I use old steel window weights to hold my plastic tarps down. I tie them to the tarps with old wire or old rope. I do not cover during the summer months, only during the months of use -beginning in October and ending in April.

Good thought..I usually use empty 1 gal milk jugs half filled with sand and that’s from oct thru the end of winter..the only reason it’s covered now is we have been having a shit load of rain lately. When we expect good weather I pull off the tarps..takes a few minutes to cover it back up. I have a lot of wood in log lengths at my staging area in my wood lot waiting for someone to go and cut and split it for me. But there never seams to be any takers. I’m always a full year ahead with my firewood

Got started splitting my Winter heat. Still had some Elm and Maple leftover from last year, so one decent sized Cherry tree will be enough.

    Merry Christmas!
    Question
for the wood burners: On the first fire when we get to our mountain house in cold weather, when the stoves cold, it seem like a column of cold air falls out of the chimney pushing smoke into the room until the works get warmed up. I'm looking for tips to prevent / minimize this phenomena?
The story: I have a weekend place in the mountains that we'll probably retire to. This will be our second winter. I have propane and wood and I can run the HVAC from an app, so can turn on the heat while we're driving up. Once the stoves warmed up, no problem. I've YouTubed it so I have a couple of ideas, but thought I'd throw it out there. Happy Holidays!

Have you tried opening a door or window, just put some paper in the firebox, light it and get the chimney warmed up a litte first? Trying to light an entire fire when the cold air is flowing down the chimney can be a real pain.
My stove is in the basement with an outside chimney, the worst possible draft conditions, so I deal with this quite often. Opening the basement door helps.
