If it is a wood stove with smoke pipe and class A chimney, you will need to start a really small fire until the chimney has time to warm up and stop the cold air from dropping. If you have a wood insert in a masonry fireplace, the same applies but you can help it by having an insulated 6" liner. How tall is the chimney?

I will second the small fire method. With our soapstone stove this I’d normal protocol. 12 - 16 small six inch pieces of kindling stacked like a log cabin a few splinters set down in the middle. Light a 6inch sliver and place it in the middle to get the slivers to light. Door at a crack. Just enough focused heat to warm the chimney. Then build up with small sticks until coal base is formed. Good luck…

I tried the 'small fire' when we got up there on Christmas. A few sticks of cedar to warm up the works before building the fire. Seemed to work pretty well. I think it also helped to turn on the propane heat ahead of time so the place was warmed up when we got there.

I have an old Russo woodstove, I will set a box fan in front the air intake vent to help push the air out of the stove it gets a draft going very quickly and helps keep the sooty mess from getting all over the basement.

I'm on my 4rd winter with this stove, I'm getting the hang of it.

My janky woodshed made mostly from pallets and a neighbors scrapped cedar post fence and some "cover" sheets of metal siding.

So, I’m looking for an electric log splitter to split seasoned logs into even smaller pieces to start my fire after kindling has caught . 2-3” or even a little smaller. Any thoughts ?
    Thanks

Wasn’t super fun. Had to buck ( I think that’s the correct word) load up my truck and drive out back to unload. I did like 2 logs a day with some breaks in between. Some pieces I couldn’t lift up so I had to bring my splitter up to make it doable. I got plenty of wood for a few years. People want like $350 per cord . Screw that. I paid $600 for that grapple load. For roughly 8 cord. My house is small so I’ll get about 5 years of wood heat
