others will know a lot more than me, but when I set my SOA pack up with bumps and shocks I basically went up until the main leaf was just slightly negative, and down until they start to separate.

    Check My Sig.
Add 2” wheel spacers and be done. That will help match the front width and prevent the need of a frame notch.

A frame notch would be legit but adds to the complexity of the job.

Yeah i already have 2 inch wheel spacers so I'm not worried about it.

So between negative arch and leaf separation is clean travel?

yeah, that and I’d watch for the shackle angle ( shouldn’t go past 90° from vertical at droop) or if it hits the hangar at all. I don’t think you’d have that issue but I’ve never actually installed a SUA or DMZ kit.
Since that kit is so proven, I wouldn’t expect any issues

There are some other benefits to notching and moving the shock inboard. Yes it is more work though. Much like everything else that’s worth the effort.

What are the benefits? (not having a go, just learn)

Long time lurker, seldom poster :)

ETA: I thought it was better/easier to tune with shocks as far outboard as possible, making the motion ratio near 1:1. The problem with this of course is you need longer shocks along with packaging and tire clearance of course.

I was dead set on notching the frame above the axle for the most uptravel possible but Tim @ dmz recommend against it. Makes springs go negative too often and will drastically shortened their lifespan.

Yea you're correct there ...just overestimating how much clearance from the tire is available on these trucks. It's not much, and having a better shock(bypass) and adequate clearance for it is more important than a couple inches of leverage on the axle anyway

I rub on my 3.0 smoothies with 315’s and a 1.5” spacer sometimes!
My shocks are about as close to the frame as I’d want them to be.

How close are you setup? I will be doing slow stuff too and will need flex room.

Plan on rubbing with no notch. I’m on 1.25 spacers and -38 wheels and I rub tubes in the slow stuff. Between spacer and wheels it’s roughly 3” wider per side.

Check out DMZ’s IG. Look how he does the notch and mounts the shock dead nuts over the leaf spring.

I finally got bigger tires 2020 Long Travel Tacoma 1997 MAGNUM
Do you have 12.5 tires or 13.5? I'm running 13.5 and got the shock as close as I could to the frame with 1.5" spacers and -12 offset. Tires are still extremely close not articulated

12.5” here. But yeah. Not enough room without a notch really any direction you go.

11.5 on a 2 inch spacer. I never rubbed on my previous 2.5 setup but I will definitely look out for that. I think a frame notch is out of the question for my build at this point,

Weren’t you smoothies previously? As soon as tubes are added into the mix things go south. 11.5’s however will help your cause.

I was, what's the closest I can put the shocks against the frame? An inch? Rather hit rubber than steel.

Best bet is to flex it out when you’re doing your setup with the packs broke down.
