so many people say dealers never change the oil, they just say they do it and screw you over
how about most everyone goes to work and does their job
with your way thinking i can say in your profession/job you are just like "all the toyota techs" and while you are at work you dont do your job either and screw people over every day

unfortunately that is the way this country is going
people don't seem to want to do the work they are paid to do anymore
and i have seen it first hand
this forum is full of those stories

i wasn't raised to be like that and actually take some pride in my work
you don't know me so don't project your bitter shit on me

i do most of the work on my vehicles and home
when there is something that is above my pay grade, so to speak, i make sure i find someone with a solid reputation; someone that has done right by my neighbors/friends in the past

so you do you, keep being a dick and reap the rewards of that blind trust
we'll see how that goes for you

    sorry i triggered you
no need to start calling names
people never post that my oil change was perfect today at the dealership, we only hear of the bad ones and not the 1000's that have no problems
do you want me to remove my post?

    no, leave it

i didn't appreciate the implication that i don't work hard for my paycheck
or that i try to screw people over
this was the trigger because i work hard to do exact opposite and help more than i should, to my own detriment/expense

if i made those assumptions about you, you probably wouldn't be happy either

i get that we only hear when something is wrong
i work in a customer facing environment so i am acutely aware that this happens
but the days of assuming that "most everyone goes to work and does their job" to an adequate degree are over
if you want something done right, you need to invest a little bit of time to make sure that happens

Too lazy to read the whole thread, but if it hasn’t been mentioned, change your oil while the vehicle is cold, if you change it on a warm engine everything will be swollen. Cardboard is always a great option for floor protection too.

I've never had a problem with oil change shops other than their upsell. I do believe they do the work efficiently, at least better than me. Plus, they warrant the repairs in case something happens. My motivation to learn to do it myself is so that I can understand my vehicle better and save money in the long run. Eventually, I'll trust myself more than a new tech.

Thanks for all the feedback and encouragement as well. I went ahead and pulled out the oil filter housing, re-did the O-ring with a new one. Funnily enough, I found the old O-ring still in place in the position where the new O-ring had to go. Such a poor oversight!

BTW, can I buy just the O-ring somewhere since I'm now one O-ring short?

Mine sticks every time. I have a TDR Off Road 2WD. the drain plug is a bitch to get at and have to use a long screwdriver to pop the washer off.

The first oil change i did the entire canister turned when trying to undo the drain plug.
Since then i just remove the canister and let it run out into a bucket, yea a bit messy mostly on my hands.
when you put the canister back on finger a bit of oil on the threads.
I torque to 18 lbs and that is where it bottoms out.
The whole process is a pain in the ass!

    Under the Radar
This was just posted on a 4Runner forum I frequent. Lot of dealer hacks out there!

"Yesterday I took my 2020 TRD Off Road to the dealership to get the oil changed. Normally I do it myself, but I was out already and didn't have time. Traditionally this dealership is awesome and I actually used to work for them when I was in college. They bring my car around the building, park it and let me know it's ready. I got out, crank it up and alarms start going off on the dash "low oil pressure, pull over and turn vehicle off". I pop the hood, check the lipstick and......BONE DRY!!! They forgot to put oil in it. I know mistakes happen and I walked in and told the service advisor. He was genuinely concerned and he had his head technician go out, full check it, put oil in it and profusely apologized. I drove it all day and no issues seemed to pop up. I know some residual oil was still in there, but I say ALL that long story to ask this. In reality how much damage could have been done in that slow 200 ft drive around the building to park it? Do I need to be overly concerned long term with the life of this legendary engine or do I need to chill and not worry?"

Nobody in their right mind would forget to refill the oil, I thought! Poor seal, yeah. Made a mess, yeah. All that seems more likely than the entire point of the whole thing which is to pour in new oil after it's drained.

Nobody in their right mind would forget to put an oil filter element in the housing, right?

If you don’t like the smell and feel of oil on your hands you need to go turn in your man card. You live in California so everything is giving you cancer anyway.

Put a coat of new oil on the o rings and on the canister threads prior to installing.

Is this why the plastic housing was tough to take off with a warm engine?

I hand-tightened the plastic one prior to the next oil change and it took a little more elbow grease to loosen it.

The aluminum one was tight too but not as tight as the plastic. (After I replaced the plastic housing)
