    3. A note to wear gloves next time

I told myself, come on, yes it might be carcinogenic but how bad can it be if I do it once or twice without gloves. It probably didn't give me cancer, but I still smell of oil two hours after the change. It's not a good feeling, and it's probably wise anyway to avoid unpleasant substances. Next time I'm carrying some nitrile gloves, nothing fancy that costs unnecessary dollars.

    You're joking right ?
Hundreds of thousands of mechanics ( that's right mechanics not "techs") didn't wear nitrile gloves and there wasn't even such things until recently. No such thing as ppe in construction when I worked it. Hard hard and steel toes only started in the 1970's.

Exactly. I would say even the metal expands, probably minute, also why it’s good to warm up a cold engine in the winter before hammering the throttle.…
Both rubber gasket rings will be slightly swollen. I like to change mine on a cold engine and 1/4 turn if that on the oil filter after a hand tightening. The canisters have their own stopping point. don’t over tighten the canister drain cap either, that’s real easy to do. I might be old-school for this, but I take a drop of clean oil and put it on the gasket of the new oil filter with my finger.

The oring was put on the wrong slot of the filter . This is very important to change right away.If the oil starts to leak you can very easily destroy your engine in short order . The oring needs to be on the first slot which goes up in the chamber for the oil filter cartridge . SUPER IMPORTANT!!!!
The gasket on the drain plug needs to be there also but this can only cause a very small leak , but still it’s not right . I know you just spent money on oil and a filter but this needs to be fixed in short other , sorry for the bad news

As long as it don’t leak you are good . Maybe next time make sure you change it , not the end of the world .

I’ve never seen so much go wrong with an oil change on any other vehicle I’ve owned. Toyota made it complicated for way too many people to work on this truck.

Yeah, I agree...the aluminum does expand a lil bit.

Using the housing wrench to loosen it does not take as much effort...but it does feel like it expanded.

Oil pan bolt/gasket is now replaced with Fumoto.

The traditional oil filter is replaced by a housing/paper filter.

The basics haven't changed...just the method of removing the oil filter now involves pre-draining/removing the housing. (Some may not pre-drain)

The drain valve/hose is part of the MotiveX kit so I go ahead and use it.

my 2.7 has the traditional oil filter, but my Camry has the same canister filter, I use a metal canister remover, but I always feel like the plastic is going to snap one of these days. The teeth make it pretty much fail proof.. I prefer the traditional filter.

I used to reuse the old washer pretty much always. Then I started to get very, very small drips from the plug on my 1996 so I bought a batch and now replace them with every change. Solved the loss of 2 grams of oil between changes.

What’s the part number on the metal filter housing?

    Toyota’s website for 15620-31060 claims it won’t fit a 3rd gen Taco.

    That's the correct Part Number.

I was skeptical about fitment because of that statement but I went ahead and installed one.

Identical housing and filter fits as the OEM...no issues/leaks.

This technician not paying attention, CYA problem. Tech never do small things, to let him/her know, never fill engine oil yet. Obviously, could have lost engine. Would not blame owner if never goes back to this dealer. Could make big shirt stink on social media.

15 minutes? As long as the oil and filter are delivered to your driveway and you have a waste oil burner.

Still takes me LESS time than the drive to the dealer and wait in the waiting area…………I do it cheaper AnD use better oil, PLUS it force’s one to look under the truck at every interval………

one of the pluses of the 4th gen, is Toyota going back to a canister filter…….

I've fucked up several times now, after having owned the truck for just over a year...

First major fuckup was draining the tranny oil. There was crazyness at home with a pregnant wife, I thought I could be quick and do a lightning speed oil change in a dark garage. Drained fluid into a drain pan, filled engine with 6q of oil, then dumped the old oil into the oil containers to get recycled. When I did that I noticed like only 3 quarts came out and started freaking out. Made a post on here (thank God for this forum) and someone pointed out "Make sure it's not the tranny pan you drained! Sure enough, it was.... had the truck towed to a mechanic for a proper refill. This embarrassing but apparently common experience is archived on this website for eternity, but hopefully it helps someone else out.

Second less major and most recent screwup: I usually keep several filters on hand as I try to change the oil every 3-4k miles. I was at Wal Mart and decided to buy a couple filters. Upon returning I noticed the ones I already had the part number was one digit different. The last # was "7" instead of a "1". Turns out they were filters for some Scion. I did an oil change the next day to make sure I didn't use one of the Scion filters last time and it turns out I did. They're identical just slightly (significantly) smaller. Thankfully I was only a few 100 miles into the last oil change.

Who'da thought changing the oil could be so complicated...

You’re telling me you didn’t want to jumper pins 5 and 26 into diagnostic mode and refill your transmission at precisely 104-111 degrees, while finding the solid D in neutral…? The tranny fluid change is super fun and definitely doesn’t make anyone nervous.

Been changing oil myself for over forty years on many vehicles. I’ve done 15 oil changes on my 2020 now and they’ve all been a minor league pain in the ass. Most troublesome of all I’ve ever done.

It's hilarious. That's exactly why I just had it towed to a mechanic.

I wonder if Toyota struck a deal with "big dealership" to make some of the most basic stuff as complicated as possible.

"Front diff requiring 100 ft.lbs.? Let's make it a hex head!" :cue evil laughter:
