Radar at 5:54AM shows that much of the state is dry as we wake up this morning except for some shower activity over the southeastern parts of the state and over the Alabama Gulf Coast. No big deal for now, but that will be a different story as we move into the afternoon hours.

While no severe weather is expected in Alabama this morning, there is a significant threat for severe weather shaping up for this afternoon through the overnight hours tonight for the entire state, including a moderate risk for severe storms over portions of extreme western and southwestern Alabama

With the lack of destabilization taking place across Alabama, NWS Birmingham has adjusted the timing for the severe weather threat window for tonight and into tomorrow morning.

While the above image shows the counties covered by NWS Birmingham, it gives the best depiction of the timing. I’ll stretch it out to cover everyone in the state as far as this timing. For locations west of a line from Huntsville to Brookwood to Mobile, the threat window will be from 7PM to 1AM Sunday. East of that, the threat window will be from 10PM to 4AM Sunday. And for locations east of a line from Heflin to Alexander City to Greenville, the threat window will be from 2AM to 7AM Sunday. We could see tornadoes, some of which could be strong, long-track tornadoes in the enhanced and moderate risk locations, damaging winds up to and possibly exceeding 70 mph, and hail up to ping pong ball size in diameter.

The Significant Tornado Parameter values coming off of the latest ensembles show that there is a major tornado threat over the southwest portions of Alabama and into the southern half of Mississippi and down into eastern Louisiana. Some of these values are topping out around 7.25. Any value over 1.0 means that there will be the risk of a significant tornado… 7.25 means there is a greater risk.

Major damage from a violent tornado near Bude, Mississippi was just shared on X. The Image shows a home has been completely obliterated and at least a half-mile wide track of snapped trees.

The National Weather Service in Mobile has issued a Tornado Warning for southwestern Choctaw County and northwestern Washington County in southwestern Alabama, as well as east-central Wayne County in southeastern Mississippi, effective until 10:00 PM CST. At 9:36 PM CST, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 6 miles southeast of Waynesboro, moving east at 40 mph. Radar indicated rotation within the storm, posing a significant tornado threat.

This tornadic thunderstorm is expected to affect mainly rural areas of southwestern Choctaw, northwestern Washington, and east-central Wayne counties. The tornado may produce dangerous flying debris, which poses a threat to anyone caught without shelter. Mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed, and damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles is likely. Tree damage is also possible.

TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. Stay alert and take immediate action to ensure your safety.
