@Sig45 so wanted to get your opinion on something. I'm priming and painting the trim in my room, the old wood look is just outdated so I'm going to be refreshing it. Years ago in the 70's they removed the quarter round along the base to install carpet over the hardwood. I'm planning on installing it again, but am on the fence if I should just paint it, or get stain grade and stain it to somewhat match the floor? You're more in tune with what might look better.

Much easier to see so less likely to step in. Unlike dogs.

Nah, they're all inside cats. Somehow they're getting through the attic into the basement where she gets them. Thought I've sealed all routes, but looks like I need more steel wool :annoyed:

    Are you pulling the carpet?

Is the quarter round even needed? Did they butt the hardwood up to the trim (instead of running under the baseboard trim)?

Personally I despise shoe moulding/quarter round along the floor. To me it's a sign of laziness and not pulling the baseboard to properly install a floor. See it all the time with LVP and laminate.

Yea, it has some gaps unfortunately. It goes under the base, but over the years between old termite damage and settling it has some 1/8" gaps in places. Another thing is there is an ugly bare spot around the base as they stained/finished everything after the quarter round was already down. Not in the budget to sand down and refinish the floors, even though it needs it.

@Sig45 I pulled the carpet before moving in. Pretty much hit the floor lottery.

Plus being a former smokers house the carpet was uhm... nasty... :puke:

    Old 713 smooth base.

Or carefully tape the floor and caulk the gap. Big Stretch or Dynaflex

Looks the same as in my house. All that old shellac trim.

Yea, I am quite fond of Amber Shellac for touch ups. For a while it was unobtainable, but I found a quart and bought it. I might go ahead and get the "stain grade" and shellac it and see how it looks. Worse case is I can paint it if I don't like it. I've never put down stain grade so I gotta be more precise on my cuts

Just prime & paint as is and see how it looks. With the contrast against the floor those gaps may disappear (visually). And furniture will distract the eye. People rarely look down. That's such narrow trim and shoe will look worse IMO.

My neighbor is a professional painter. He told me years ago that people view the world roughly from the perspective of their height, give or take a few inches. When painting everything in that zone needs to be near perfect. But stuff up high and down low rarely get a look longer than a microsecond.

Hmmm, you're right. Worse case, I can add it later.

This is why I tag you in stuff like this. :fistbump:

He told me this when we were working together many years ago. Old house and I was trying to make some trim miters and copes perfect in some corners that were neither plumb nor square. He said, they're great, paint will fill that small gap...probably 1/16". Then he said "you've been staring at this trim for hours (all of it in general). Everyone else will just give it a quick glance and move on".

There are times where it needs to be perfect or nearly perfect and there are times when it's just fine the way it is.

That advice has served me well through the years.

    @Delta09

    Pro Tip with trim.

When buying trim in multiple/various pieces/lengths. Always miter/cope from the same piece. I've found that pieces from the same bay/lot can have slight differences in milling, thus making it frustrating that things are lining up nicely.

I calculate material to take this into account.

This applies more to big box store pruduct versus product purchased from a lumber yard. Stuff like Windsor One is milled to a higher standard.

Man, I wish I could update all the trim in the house, but that's completely out of the budget. Got some plans for the garage this Spring so I gotta save on the budget right now.

    My favorites are:

    1x6 Baseboard with cove cap

1x4 (or 1x5) side casing and one size wider 5/4 head casing on windows & doors. Cove wrapped around top is nice too. Ties it all together.

Clean, simple and timeless. Kinda like Shaker furniture.
