I wonder what the acceptable accuracy is of this sensor. Probably has a +/- 10% tolerance from the factory.

Last Summer, I plugged in the scanner for a reading while I drove around town (100+ and very humid), my numbers ranged from 185-190 F.

I will check again soon and report.

Well damn. I installed the jiggle wiggle wrong. I'll change it tomorrow and let you'll know what happens.

Should do the trick. If you're at 198° now that should lower it to 188° on average which is what it's supposed to run at

After I did my timing belt and water pump, I installed my Toyota thermostat with the jiggle valve at 12:00 (out of habit). My coolant temps on my Ultragauge would go as high as 210 going uphill. I took out the thermostat to put the valve at 6:00 and now the highest the coolant temp gets is 196.

Yep, as others have said, on the 3.4L the jiggle goes down (6 o clock). I just confirmed this myself today.

I have a 2002 Ext Cab 3.4L TRD 4x4 running Toyota red coolant, and I recently bought an UltraGauge. I saw my operating temp was always steady at 199-202F once warmed up. Today I drained the coolant and took the thermostat housing off, BINGO, the jiggle was up at 12 o clock. I rotated it 180 degrees, put it all back together, and now I'm running at 188-190F.

It may not make any sense, but it is 100% confirmed by many folks here at TW.

A lot of bad information on the web about putting it in the 12 o clock position from people who say they got that information out of the FSM. I have a PDF version FSM for year 2000 I believe and it definitely says 6 o clock. I actually did a test and put it at 12 o clock and the difference is 20 degrees!!!! JIGGLE DOWN DOG FOR THAT 188 GAME.

Normally, my thermostat reads 187-188. It rarely - and I mean rarely - deviates.

Today, I drove *hard* down I-5 in Northern California. The thermostat rose to 192. It has never gotten so hot before.

Another person posted FSM normal operating temps are 176 - 203 F.
My jiggle valve is at 12, and it runs 178 to 181.

My temp reads 176 F/80 C with the Corolla 170 F thermostat. Is it normal for the AC not to blow hot air when the engine reaches operating temp and idling on max heater?

Sounds like your cold(er) thermostat is affecting your heater performance

I don't know why guys get so obsessed over +/- 10 degrees. A cold thermostat won't protect anything, it'll just make you run around luke-warm and get crappy gas mileage. Picture the catalytic converters getting soaked with raw fuel..

That's a bit much... Running 20* colder is just fine as long as it's consistent. I wouldn't run one here in AZ though because my temps run up to 220, but it's not going to affect your gas mileage as it's not going to run richer

Yeah, I'm in the desert too and running a supercharger now. I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea running the 170 F thermostat with that in mind. @lajeff, you're probably right about the heater core. Had some AC issues not too long ago but never replaced the heater core so that might be on it's way out or clogged. If I drive the truck around, the air does get hot on heater but not super hot as before when I had the 180 F thermostat.
