Good morning guys! Time to put this year to bed and move on.

I’m going to a New Year’s Eve party tonight with some other radio nerds. We’re doing a parks on the air activation just before midnight and into 2025 to get some awards for last day/first day activations. The really nice thing about this it’s ran by UTC, universal time, what we used to call Greenwich Mean Time. All that mouthful to say at 2400 UTC it’s only 1800 our time so we will start, finish and be back home and in bed by our regular bedtime. All within the rules of the contest lol.

Have a great New Year’s Eve and taco Tuesday!

Good morning guys :hattip: If we still wrote checks it would be the time we keep messing up the date with the wrong year. Have a great Thursday!

Here's my radio contact map from the New Year’s Eve park activation. The bands were starting to open up to the west as we finished. It was a fun couple of hours and we were all back home before it got stupid out there.

Is there a reason (besides language) all the contacts are north of you with none in the southwest?

Good question Rusty, TL;DR answer is radio wave propagation can be very strange and does what it wants.

In theory, it should have been contacts from all over but for whatever reason they were mostly coming in from the northeast and Great Lakes. After the sun set was when we started picking up the stations in the northwest. They never came in like the northeast did though.

One of our guys has a lower level license and is restricted on the frequencies he can use. He was working the 10 meter band which is generally considered a daytime band, it really drops off after sunset. He was having good luck all night and ended up getting the contacts that were farther away than the rest of us. He pulled in 2 stations from Alaska and a Hawaii station.

Good guess Eddie, he was in Swift Current. You were off by 174 kilometers according to Google maps.
