I know a couple guys running 16s with 63s. Those springs flex well. 14s are a good size for tacos imo. Depending on where you have the shocks set, you might want to strap the rear to prevent excessive tugging on those shocks at full droop/articulation

Do you have a front locker? Tacomas with front lockers and 35s on the runs I’ve been on have been able to drive every obstacle. Typically everyone ends up winching once and it’s usually a crap shoot for which obstacle you winch. I think the only one I’ve never had to winch was chewy

I have a set of straps sitting in the garage for it. Yesterday I pulled out the temporary 2" block and threw in a leaf. It's sitting dang near level. Once I get it out I'll and fully articulated I'll have a better idea of what length to strap it at. I clearances the mounts to allow the spherical bushings do their thing so at least the shock shafts aren't getting bound up at all.

I'm not too proud to use the winch... it's never been used it'll be good practice.

    Happy New Year everyone!

Yesterday was a fun day for me. I drove up to Layfeyette to visit my brother and show him the 87 pickup. He left corporate life when he was around 50 years old and bought the Bone Yard junkyard in Commerce City. After 10 years he sold the business and retired. For his retirement gift to himself, he built a detached 3 car garage with a lift to go with his house with a 2 car attached garage . He's been retired for 16 years. He loves restoring cars and over his life, he has owned/restored every muscle car you can think of along with some British sports cars such as Austin Healeys and Jaguars. His latest project is a Triumph TR6.

It was a beautiful sunny 30 degree day so we took the convertible out for a spin of course. We both had big grins as I accelerated uphill and around some curves, testing the rebuilt engine, new front suspension and exhaust he recently installed.

When we got back, we put the 87 pickup on the lift to inspect the underneath.

You can see surface rust all over, however the frame passes the hammer test with a resonating "ping" rather than the sound of egg shell crushing.
The rocker panels are solid and the bed seams, where these pickups rust, are in tacked. The 87 lived half its life in California and the rest in Colorado.
We also performed a compression check just to see what the numbers look like. We both made our predictions, my brother predicted 140 psi and I went with 160 psi. Here are the results:

The 4 spark plugs look in good condition. I am very happy to see those compression numbers for a 192,000 mile 22RE engine, especially since they are within 4% of their average.

What is that clamshell thing wrapped around the front driveshaft U-joint as it exits the transfer case? Is that some sort of safety hoop?

Seems similar to the carrier bearing on the 1st gen rear driveshafts.

Yep - some sort of protective cover.

When I first looked at it, I thought it was a carrier bearing too, but upon further review it is a protective cover around the driveshaft U-joint.

Well roll cages are not fun at all. I have unlimited respect for people that build these for a living. This was a kit and I still had one hell of a couple of days getting it tacked together

Hi all, after 250,000 miles, the dreaded frame rust gremlin has appeared on my '02 Taco.

Anybody have a recommendation for welder/fabricator in the Fort Collins/Northern Colorado area?[IMG][IMG][IMG]

Package being "delivered" by On Trac today.
Wanna start a pool to see if it gets here or across town?
I really should just drive over there, introduce myself and leave my phone number with them.

Everything is cleared, unbolted, and ready for removal. Who wants to by an LC80 Drive train?

    Pulling that first. Axles next.
