What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

My truck is not a daily driver. I would guesstimate switching exhaust every 15k miles. This will likely be my last setup. I had the choice to go with Corsa or AWE. Opted to go with AWE as the Corsa will probably be too loud for my wife. Plus I like the dual tips setup. With the AWE exhaust I can remove the tips to make it high clearance if needed.

Plus it’s cheaper to switch exhaust vs buying a new truck. Maybe in a year or two when Toyota fix all the reliability issues on the 4th gen Pro

 

The Hella H9 2.0s are good, they have a very light coating which reduces output slightly over that of the Philips H9 but will also be slightly whiter/have a higher color temp. The HID H9 will not be pnp, it will require a ballast. Running HIDs in halogen housings is not advisable, the uplight allowance is not calibrated for HID output and will result in excessive glare to oncoming drivers. There are also no legitimate HID bulbs for halogen housings, just cheap Chinese junk, meaning their UV output will burn your projector bowls and ruin your headlights over time. There is also issues with rf and electrical interference from many cheap ballasts. If you want to do HID you need a full retrofit and should use OEM HID projectors at a minimum, best to use OEM ballasts as well and OEM grade bulbs from Osram and Philips. A reasonable HID setup will have costs approaching the OEM LED headlights, which then makes the $20 spent on Philips H9s to double your headlight out look pretty good.

 

Someone else posted here ... seriously did post ... "well, the HIDs I put in the halogen reeeeaaaally are brighter, but I cannot use my head unit to listen to anything when the HIDs are on ... oh well".

 

Don’t doubt it. Pretty common, especially when trying to listen to the FM radio. If using an OEM ballast you don’t have that problem and the HID headlights also ignite much quicker. Quality costs more.

Had mine installed about a year now. They are brighter.

 

I don't believe that. We have a lot of temp changes above/below freezing, heavy dew, whatever, and I have never had a headlight or taillight fog. The only ones I've ever seen that did had problems. Water and bulbs don't mix.

 

Right on... I too put a LOT of time reading his posts on halogens (since I have an SR). I didn't want to delve into the expense of retrofitting and OEM headlight upgrades. I just simply wanted the brightest bulbs for all the OEM lighting I have.

I am very grateful for all the time and research he put into all the illumination threads he started. It was a great resource and I can see at night so much better than when I got this truck

 

I swore off leds, and then embraced it pretty heavily. I always used the sylvania whites in my previous cars, because I read that blue shit was just nonsense. It’s all led in there now.

 

Welp, just pulled the trigger on the Phillips H9's from Amazon (link in prior post), for 2 of them it was $24.64 with tax (9.25%) to my door, should be here Saturday sometime....

Like 2k2 (and others), I do not ever plan on spending $$$$ for head lights... I had rather have a nicer sound system for about the same money... lol

In the end that's exactly what I did, returned HID and other bulbs, I ordered original type H9's, or what I believed I ordered, at least the item detail technical information stated that origin of the Sylvania H9 is Germany. My eyes glazed over on the first post of your thread, and that thread, is very informative, I appreciate your effort on that, you really earned title of Subject Matter Expert.

 

Man, so much to consider when replacing freakin headlight bulbs. So many costly consequences.

 

I would NEVER be so rude and inconsiderate as to suggest to @crashnburn80 that that first post would make my eyes glaze over. It is more riveting than Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones combined.

It’s a fact that it is normal with housings, OEM or aftermarket. Some are more/less prone to it (likely based on the location of breathers on the back, I imagine).
