This is the volunteer who ended up taking us to the "fire room", an area not normally open to the public, after I expressed an interest in seeing the engine room. My cousin Thomas volunteered as a tour guide on New Jersey's sister ship, the Wisconsin (BB-64), and when he mentioned this I think that worked in our favor as well...

As everybody who knows anything about battleships knows, they are powered by steam. There are four engines, and I thought that the heat exchanger resembled the ends of the condensers on the numerous A/C units I've torn apart over the last two years. The big difference here is that these are much larger, and also made out of steel instead of the copper and aluminum and HVAC coils are made out of...
