How to convince the parents?

Hey, I have been a taco fan for years and it is now time for me to buy a new vehicle. I have been going to college in PA and now that I am going to graduate in May and I already have a job out there, I am looking to get a taco. Here's the problem, I can't quite afford it myself and my parents don't understand why I need or want a truck. They have always driven sedans or minivans. They have talked about helping me get a new car as a graduation gift since my current mustang convertible, which I drive in socal where I grew up, is not ideal for PA weather.

I can sort of see their view because I don't have stuff to tow and other than moving stuff to my apartment after I graduate, I probably wont have much stuff to haul. I like driving dirt roads but I think I'd be too nervous for hardcore wheelin.I like the taco because it's badass and versatile.

Ideally I'd like a double cab 4x4 sr5. The double cab so I can comfortably drive people around, 4x4 because I am a volunteer firefighter and end up having to drive around in bad weather, and sr5 because I want some comfort options, don't like the black fenders, and don't really need the TRD options which cost more.

How do I convince my parents that I should get this truck?

 

Why convince them of anything? Just wait until you can afford it. It will be much more satisfying if you pay for it yourself. Either that, or buy used. Who says you have to have new? You should be able to find a good used Tacoma with plenty of life left. Plus, buying used you may be able to swing exactly what you want rather than settling for something else just because it is new. If you are graduating and have a job lined up, I congratulate you.

 

Well sit down and have a good long talk with them. Make sure to do your homework, go to the Toyota dealer and get some booklets to show them.
Also look into the resale value over the other trucks, beside all what is happening to the big 3.
Make sure you can cover ALL the bases will complete details, have an answer to all the questions. If you want have them come here...... and we can tell them how we feel about our Taco's.
As for what you get on it, the call is yours, but don't short change yourself for price, I agree with comfort, but don't kick yourself in the butt down the road if you get something and wish you would of gotten the other option. I know money is a factor, BUT make sure to weigh everything out.

I'm fine with getting it used I just need to get something by June. Longbow I think you are right with the sitting down and coming up with an answer to all their questions. Eventually I should probably get them to a dealership to see it but knowing how much they hate car shopping and the limited time I have at home, that may prove to be difficult. My girlfriend keeps telling me to get what I really want because it will last me a long time and in the long run the extra $1000 wont be that big of a difference.

How much do you think I could get a double cab 4x4 for? The list prices are between 27k and 31k but invoice is closer to 26k. What do you think the dealers would offer, when I get ready to buy I plan on doing it mostly over the internet and playing the dealers against eachother, and I don't mind driving a little ways to get a good deal?

Just tell them they have no idea what PA winter is like. I don't know what it's like in York, but I go to college in Erie. 100+ inches of snow during the winter is normal. 4x4 trucks and suv's are the ONLY things that I see on the road moving (I'll see a stuck car every now and then ) whenever the weather gets bad here.

Ya they live in cali but they went to college in boston back in the day. My dad also grew up in europe. They have the mindset of if the weather is bad, stay inside.

 

safety. if i remember right...the new tacomas have an excellent crash test rating.

 

Well around here in winter there will be no snow one minute then BAM! Blizzard.

You can't plan for weather, so you need something that will get you through everything.

 

Hey MSteinhauer, I work in York too. I commute from MD daily and enjoy driving the taco everyday. Only the main roads get plowed around York so 4x4 is very usefull. I'm still trying to find a good off road location near by though.

 

Show them this thread. Have them peruse this website with its 11,000+ members, particularly the Gallery. Take pictures all winter and show them what it's like. Then, sit them down for a discussion.

If that doesn't work, threaten to throw them in a nursing home at the first sign of senility and tell them you'll drive them their in the Tacoma that you bought on your own dime later on because, after all, they're helping you so they really do have a say in what they help you buy.

 

2nd poster said it is more satisfying when u make the purchase yourself......... being the spoiled 18 year old little bitch/occasional hard worker that I am...... at the end of the day it doesnt really matter who bought the damn truck, but whos driving it.... ME!... lol

Access cab, 4x4, 4cyl. might be a practical sell to them? If you can convince them you will be safer on the road in a pickup ,than getting smashed by a pickup in your little car. Not to mention the 4x4 for snow/ice.

I agree with a few that have said it is much more satisfying paying for it your self. My parents had more then enough to buy my brother and I bran new what-evers at 16, but didn't give me a dime. I ended up having to wait until i worked enough side jobs after school to buy my own dodge dakota (piece of shit mind you). Didn't understand it at the time, but now i have the responsibility that cant be acquired otherwise.

If i were you and had a decent job lined out right out of school, and you just really want that taco, It would be best for you and your credit to get them to co-sign on it, rather then buy something out right.

okay, i can definitely help here b/c i am 16, and just went through this(successfully) with my parents. You really have to play to the safety advantages, plus getting good gas mileage, you know all the practical things they will relate to. Talk about how with the weather in PA you see cars get stuck and skidding out all the time w/o 4 wheel drive, which sometimes results in crashes. The tacoma gets great crash test ratings, and you are a 100 times safer in a truck rather than in a car in the event of a collision, becuase you can remind them that although YOU are a good driver, its others that are to be worried about. Then mention that the tacoma gets good mileage, and is very practical as a daily driver, and in the event that you need to haul something(which actually comes up more often than you think) you have a truck that can handle it. Plus, there is no possible way you can go wrong with a toyota. Tacomas hold their value better than any other truck in their class, along with all toyota vehicles. Plus, with toyotas reliability you can remind them that this will be a truck that will last you a long time. Also show them the editor reviews on edmunds.com, where they are rated the used car best bet/editors choice/etc.

Sorry for the novel, but these were the points i stressed with my parents, and it worked out, and i only had to pay for half of a 20k truck. Just focus on things like safety, and you dont have to buy new, theres really good deals on used.

 

Some of the reasons the taco rocks are gonna be easy sells. We have already owned numerous toyotas all of which have been trustworthy vehicles. In fact both my parents and my sister drive toyotas. Safety will be easy because that is what toyota decided they were going to improve this model year and my mom is big on the safety stuff. That is how i got the corolla when i started driving, she wanted ABS and side airbags. The gas mileage is not as good as the corolla my sister drives that I used to drive that i think my dad would like me to take out to PA, however if i compare it to other trucks it will be a clear winner. I think the big selling point though other than the fact that I drool every time i see a taco on the road is that the convenience of a bed for hauling would be much nicer than they realize. Back when my mom drove a toyota sienna we used it all the time to carry stuff for the garden or move 8 foot tables for events at our house. Now that she got rid of that van we use my mustang, put the top down and transport the 8 foot folding tables that way. We call it the socal pickup but it would be much nicer to have a real one. The other argument they have is that the bed is wasted space most of the time because you cant lock things in it, but I should just spin that to show the need for a toolbox or a locking tonneau cover. Thank you for all your help and ideas. I think the next step is laying out the facts for them the way i see it and be prepared to counter their arguments. Then get them to a dealership to see why i want that truck. Thanks.
