Nope. My '21 barely has any miles, and it does everything it needs to quite well.

At this point, I can reasonably conclude that I'll keep it until there is a suitable full-electric off-road capable vehicle that can take its place and its duties. Only then will I surrender my Manual gearbox... And I'll be happy.

(And I will still have another vehicle (toy) with a manual gearbox.)

Posting this question in the 3rd gen sub-topic is going to get you pretty much all negative feedback...

As someone who has a 4th gen now coming off of 2 different 3rd gens (1 automatic, 1 manual) this is what I think.

If you want more oldschool feel and technology, for sure go with the 3rd gen. The 4th gen does kind of feel like the Starship Enterprise comparing technology to a 3rd gen. The drivetrain on the 4th is improved greatly, there's no waiting for the power to kick in like the V6. But, because it's a 4 cylinder turbo it's automatically bad according to most.

This is the whole 2nd gen vs. 3rd gen thing like it was in 2015/2016. I liked my 3rd gens and like my 4th gen. Test drive them both and see what YOU think and don't just go off of a bunch of grumpy people's thoughts.

I had a 16 3rd gen that i paid 29k,gave it to my dad. He still has it only 80k miles never had an issue. I just picked up a base trd offroad for 41k. Will it be as reliable nobody knows for sure. Im just happy the 4th gen left start/stop tech out. I still trust toyota more then the big 3, time will certainly tell

I was going to say I'd get a 2025 but wouldn't go anywhere near a 2024, I'm sure they are the same trucks. That's only because this is posted in the 3G section.

I know one shouldn't buy the first year of a brand new re-design, but it was one of those things. Wanted to get out of my '22 manual so I was looking at certified used '22 and '23's and it was actually cheaper just to get a '24. Despite my vin being on the transmission TSB, I'm still trucking along at 6,000 miles. In '26 when I'm due for another one I'm sure it'll be even more sorted out.

I think the potential problems for any 1st year all new vehicle is getting issues resolved due to lack of replacement parts, and techs who haven't had the opportunity to work on them. That's outside of any unforeseen catastrophic issues that most likely would never occur.

I kind of doubt the transmission will see any revisions if the majority of the ones on the TSB are fine it will probably go unchanged for the life of the platform. I'm skeptical of the debri issue, I think Toyota has ruled everything else out and is the most likely culprit. Look at all the fullsize truck transmission issues, still the same transmissions going out in new trucks.

I couldn't tell if my F-150 has a transmission issue or not. The software updates change how it shifts. I guess there are some advantages to OTA updates but I don't like it, the technology is too needy. It's a truck there shouldn't be a screen that requires my attention.

Not me. They seem like really nice trucks, but I think they are a bit overpriced (though not outrageously so), and I think they are hideously ugly.

    No 4th Gen for me.

First, I'm in the computer business, and avoid all v1.0 products like the plague.
Last, my 2023 is 13 months old, has only 2,450 miles on it.
    My 2023 will outlast me.

Reliability aside (which will be resolved soon if not already), I can’t stand having an iPad stuck on my dash. Say what you want about Tesla, Elon should burn in hell for this alone.

Not a chance. I love 1-3G tacomas, 4G taco is an overpriced pile of junk IMHO. I also think its hideous inside and out.

Who needs a heated steering wheel, giant ugly screen, gimmicky seats, low hanging rear suspension, longer wheelbase, worse turning radius, smaller gas tank etc etc. Tacomas used to be pretty basic and simple work/offroad trucks, not anymore. The PRO has a wider stance due to wheel offset, it doesnt even come with extended travel in the front. What a joke... and those seats haha.

I saw a 2024 TRD sport at my local dealer with cloth seats for 65K CAN, thats disgusting. I paid 40K plus taxes for my 2018 sport with premium and tech package. Toyota definitely lost me as a new truck buyer. Im gonna drive my 2018 till i cant fix it anymore, and then ill buy another used 2-3G tacoma.

I really would love to get me one of these guys:

Thats my dream toyota pick up. But it will probably never happen :sadviolin:

No PHEV? Esp with offroad, battery density sucks for travel. My ideal mix (once the taco dies in a .. century or so) will be a PHEV truck for off road and play and hauling stuff, then an efficient (I guess BEV) commuter sedan/wagon.

Right now I'm at the wrong side of the equation - taco is fine for play stuff but the Rav4 Prime is almost as good for stuff like ski runs and even light hauling (we did a ton of christmas trees for the scout troop this weekend), and well not getting rid of a working vehicle in good condition with mods and stuff tbh.

If for some reason my truck was gone right now at this moment as hard as it would be I'd probably opt for a V6 Gladiator or if I went full size a 5.0 V8 F150. It would be hard to do either but I feel so strongly opposed to the turbos in all the new Toyota trucks.

Naaa. Hybrids had their place -BUT 10 or 12 years ago! I definitely would not purchase a hybrid today.

It is not an elegant solution by modern means. Carrying 2 drivetrais is definitely NOT what I want. I want simplicity, not more complexity - and inefficiency.

I can say with certainty that I've already purchased my last-ever internal combustion vehicle ( - the taco). All battery EVs going forward.

I don't see an issue today when traveling long distances in out current EV. I'd expect batteries will be better / cleaner / lighter / cheaper by the time a taco raplacement is available... (looking at recent progress in those respects.) so batteries and vehicles will only get better.

Hybriss are a non-starter in my book.

^^^ I feel just the opposite of you regarding hybrids.

Toyota has been designing hybrid drivelines for decades and there are Prius out there with hundreds of thousands of miles. If anyone can make a reliable hybrid for a truck it is Toyota.

Plus, with a hybrid, the battery isn’t the large “skateboard” design like in most EV’s. The hybrid battery is much smaller. It is typically located higher and more centrally in the chassis (so less likely to be damaged in a small accident), and is more easily replaced if needed.

Ask any car rental company about EV’s and accident repair. Even relatively small accidents can total the vehicle if the battery pack is damaged. I'm just not sure this design makes sense in an "off road" vehicle.

I personally like the idea of EV torque combined with IC range and quick refueling.

All that said, I’m happy with my ‘21 and it only has 30k miles. I’m not even thinking about a new truck for years (hopefully).

One other benefit of a properly designed hybrid is electric power generation. My F150 powerboost could run my whole house and would easily power my camper, while being one of lowest fuel consuming generators I've ever used.

No thanks, I don't like the price and the looks of the 4 Generation. If you visit the 4 Gen page you will see all kinds of problems and complaints in the first year.
My 2021 is a keeper and probably last Tacoma that I will ever buy.
