So I bought a new engine with a 7 year warranty because the price was just too good to pass up instead of rebuilding my engine. Question is what would everyone replace while doing it? I already bought new ignition coils, plugs, wires, clutch, belts, gaskets, motor mounts, thermostat, radiator and heater hoses. I think that’s everything I’ve bought new to put on the new engine.

Harmonic balancer and crank bolt of course. If you bought the clutch did you make sure to buy the new flywheel bolts from Toyota? They're a one time use item unfortunately

no I didn’t buy those. I will right now. Does harmonic balancer brand matter or stay oem?

I would just get a nicer one like the one from Dayco, OEM would be ideal but it's heartbreakingly expensive and quite frankly it probably won't make a difference.

That seems pretty pricey for an OE equivalent TBH. I just put a dayco one on a buddies 2RZ and it's been fine. It got bonus points in my eyes for having the timing pointer in the right place

I searched for a Dayco one and couldn’t find it. Could you post a link? I found the fly wheel bolts and crankshaft bolt.

Looks like they're out of stock on them right now cuz they pulled them from the catalog. I've used this brand on some German stuff and it's been fine too.

Whats not been said Motor mounts, clean up your old engine bay, flush your heater core, don't forget your old power steering pump if you have enough miles to need a motor I'm sure your peripherals could use some love rebuild and clean up starter. Those are good things.

I didn’t have a problem with the starter or alternator so I’m not gonna replace those. Il wait till they go out. I’m not worried about that. I’m gonna do motor mounts and yeah I was looking at power steering pumps too.

I would put in a new denso crank sensor....super easy while its apart....

save the old one for back up........all the other sensors are easy to get to....

except for the temp sensor on back of engine......would definitely change

clean up your intake manifold....especially in the egr and temp sensor passages...
would even think about a new egr valve........save the old and clean it
same on IAC........I would get a new one....clean up old one for a spare
.....eventually these will be over $500.....if you can get one......non oem ones dont work.....

It still runs and drives, just has a horrible misfire in cylinder 3 and crazy loss of power. I only have 40 psi. Instead of just doing a head and timing I was going to rebuild the entire engine but then I found this one for not even 1000 more than me doing it so I thought it was worth it.

I would at least install new brushes for the alternator and rebuild the starter. Fairly cheap to do while everything is easy to get too. just a thought.
