Well, I do cheat some by using canned Pinot beans in chili sauce then fresh diced tomatoes, green peppers, red peppers and onions. Ground beef and chilli powder. Let it cook all day.

My flat roof house just can’t keep warm in these temps. Ordered a thermal camera to help identify the worst spots. Anything we open gets full insulation upgrade but we have tons of windows, a flat roof I suspect has little to no insulation and massive glass sliders. Frustrating to deal with for sure

I use canned beans and canned diced tomatoes. I hate cutting tomatoes and when everything is mixed together in chili I am not sure I could tell the difference. I do use fresh bell peppers and onions. I use 2/3 85% ground beef and 1/3 sirloin tips cut into small pieces.

Bastard only considered appearance of his houses, not the poor suckers paying to heat them.

Meatballs and smokies in the crockpot here, and cream cheese in the smoker. Nice easy lazy snacky meal...

Back there, houses were super loose, and the would size a boiler by standing across the street, with hand at arms length, however many fingers it took to cover the house, the boiler had that many sections.
Oil was so cheap, it didn't matter.

And the owners before us didn’t do anything to update the house to current standards. We did buy the house “as-is” so no surprise there.

Hahahahaha, you should see the mess I got myself into...

Ever seen the movie "money pit"?
    Yeah, that's this place.
Couple that with the fact that this is Massachusetts and, tons of people have a say on what you can do with your land, etc...

ANYWAY, don't want to get started, as I'll be a mood the rest of the night.

I have a 151 MBH boiler in a reasonably well insulated 1500 sq ft ranch with mostly newer replacement windows. Every time I have it cleaned he comments that it's almost certainly way oversized.

I have a pellet insert that's supposedly 17,000 BTUs on low and 48,500 BTUs on high. On an average winter day it more or less maintains on low and the boiler doesn't have to run except for maybe 20-30 minutes in the morning to get it back up a couple degrees to the daytime set point. On high, it can maintain the house on all but the coldest days - like negative temperatures or negative wind chills.

Let's just say my house was built in the 1930s, and was originally a 1 floor summer cottage that got added on to here and there.

Now..when I moved in 2004, all the wooden windows were ancient. Upstairs a slight breeze rattled them. No insulation in most of the house. Shall I keep going?

Thermal curtains at the sliders should help some. When your roof needs to be replaced add a few inches of insulation board to it and you’ll pick up quite a bit of R-value.

Going with a pellet insert downstairs to supplement the oil burner.

The roof will be an insanely expensive project but I’ll do it one time and do it right hopefully

IDK about your setup but I did a metal roof on mine 3 yrs ago. Well worth it plus actually helps with energy efficiency

Flat roof with a rubber membrane. Think about a commercial building and that’s my roof. It’s the style of the house too so as much as I’d love to pitch it even as little as necessary, the entire house would change.

I’ve done a ton of reading lately. I’m fine sticking with the flat roof. I just need to make sure we cut no corners and go full in when we redo. I see my detached garage/barn build floating further and further away haha.

I felt like they did next to nothing. We talked about insulation and everyone basically said no. Nobody wanted to mess with the roof/ceiling. They did a little insulation downstairs around the rim joists and they sucked at it. I’ve been redoing it all as I go.
