I'm interested in the 4th gen for the significantly higher payload rating. I'm considering a slide in camper, and I'm worried it's going to ruin my 3rd gen. Will it handle any better on a 4th gen? I have no idea. But at least I could be more comfortably within the rating.

Of course I can't afford a 4th gen, so I'm not seriously considering one.

Even sillier if you compare the hybrid to a 100% Battery EV! There is simply no comparison... The EV performs better in every way...

I know there is no EV Taco-equivalent today - but this is why I am hanging on to my '21 for the next few years... A very cool EV substitute will come. BYD already lauched an EV Pick-up in Australia and Latin america... (Yes - I know. We'll likely not see any of those offerings in the US.)

To be completely fair - Free fuel must be accounted for in the equation as well. I enjoy fueling my EV with he sunshine that falls on my roof! (All other vehicles are EVs) - And Should I also mention maintenance to-dos + costs; or lack there-of in an EV???

Not picking on the new Tacoma - the above is true in general. (For any Hybrid vs full electric.)

I have, but not a Hybrid and not a Taco, instead a Land Cruiser, and would sell off both my 15 TRDOR and a 16 Honda to cut the number of vehicles I own. Won't do it until the bugs and new gen issues are fixed and The Taco doesn't play in ANY salt and never has so selling it without a test drive would turn off people. Frame is 100% like new, gets stored over the winter, spring isn't that far away.

I paid cash. I understand though, I am lucky. I had a budget too and was trying to stick to it, but my wife came in over the top lol. It's the nicest thing I have ever owned.

I really was leaning towards an SR5 DCSB with the upgrade package initially, or a OR DCSB with the upgrade, just never clicked for me.

The 4th gen just doesn’t light my fire for a number of reasons. Planning on keeping my ‘17 for as long as I can. It’s been problem free and the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

I keep watching these new vehicle prices balloon to ridiculous amounts and it makes that decision even easier. I drive by car lots and regularly see prices of $60, 70, 80, 90, 100k+ on the windshields of various vehicles. Then, they have the nerve to put the word “ONLY” before it! Go to Hell! I could help put a local kid through school for that kind of money and feel much better about my investment than riding around in some depreciating asset that will be considered old and outdated in just a few years.

It boggles my mind. Yet, people are still lining up left and right to sign their names on the dotted lines. Not me!

I will be interested to see how Scout (est 2027) navigates these issues with full EV and some form of extended range hybrid listed on their site.
One thing is for sure, all the truck based current EV options are well out of my price range.
To say nothing of my rally cry concerning EV in general.... "200 miles range with a 10 minute charge time!" (Both battery tech and charging networks are getting closer).
(Where are those Toyota solid state batteries promised since 2018?)

No, plan on keeping my 2017 for a looong time. When it does die, I will go full-size. However, my brother and a friend got a Colorado and Canyon respectively, and man those new trucks are nice. The AT4 is a badass looking truck, but I need a larger bed.

Scout will be interesting if not just a badge. Alpha Motor Corp also has working EV prototypes with throwback styling — not yet available. But I’m not convinced I want to take an EV into Utah canyon country.

This photo of a bench seat in the Scout makes me wonder where the tallboy drink holder and 8 track player are hidden....

I cannot afford the 4th gen...

The back seat feels surprisingly smaller!

I don't have a lot of enthusiasm for the 4G, at least when I check the car sites and shop 4Gs I don't get that excited about the truck. This might be a good thing if I ever buy one.

Well.. I'm glad I got my 3rd gen when I did for a few reasons. For one, I like the lines of the 3rd gen. I like how the Celestial Silver accentuates those lines. It's not small for a mid-sized truck. I had a 1994 extended cab. I wish I still had that as well. I feel like this size is a reasonable size for a truck that can see some time off-road. I feel that my 2022 was at the upper limit of price tags that I'd be willing to pay for a new truck. The 2022 was pretty late in the series run, so, in-theory, most of the bugs should have been ironed out.

For the 4th gen... Besides the overall feel of the truck being on the too big for what it is, I like the design for the front half of the vehicle. I feel like the B-team designed the everything after the front seats. The bed and taillights look boring and ugly to me. Overall, the bed just doesn't flow and seems too big and boxy for me. The rear seats are laughably small, like, just get rid of those doors and consider all that a generous access cab. It just seems like it lost balanced proportion. Then, we come to price. It's not just the 4th gen Tacoma, but prices for new vehicles are losing their relevance to how much people should be sacrificing for their transportation needs compared to other financial needs. Prices have only gone up and ballooned way out of the realm of reasonability. Even though I might be able to swing it, I will not be normalizing their pricing trend that seeks the finite breaking point of what we are willing to put up with.

At this point, I am glad that there are as many Toyotas on the road today. My plan at this point is to go backwards in production model years. I like most of the older 4Runners and Tacomas, and LC's. There's enough around to keep me happy till I get put out to pasture.

I was just waiting behind a gen4 OR at a stoplight the other day and noticed the rear shock mounts on it. What the heck, they stick down next to the lower part of the rear tires and are almost as low as the differential! I can see they’ll become brush and rock draggers and they’ll be really fun if you air down or put chains on the rear tires.

No more Tacos after my ‘17 gives up the ghost, I’m gonna get a FJ40 or something like that along with a small off-road camping trailer for it.

I hear ya. What you're missing with the domestics is that you'll probably have likely more troubles but by 100k. Yes they are great looking trucks but that is just to trick you into buying them. They ain't pretty, they just look that way. If you decide to go that route, just accept that you will have stupid problems, that you have to waste your time going back to the dealer over and over and over again, that they will treat you like an idiot and more than likely whatever the issue is, it's your fault, and that they are doing you a huge favor. If that seems like what you want, then go for it and don't look back. I drank the koolaid for quite a while, believe me, the grass isn't greener over there. They just make it look like it is.

I'm a Toyota Lexus fan but I just can't bring myself to pay these prices of newer cars. I also can't understand why anyone would be ok with a $1200- $1500 car payment. I have the 3rd gen taco, a GX460 & a GX470. Wifey mentioned a couple days ago how she liked the new GX, so we did a little research. These prices are ridiculous, it was a hard hell no. When did we all agree it was ok to spend 60 - 70 grand on an everyday car. If the prices continue at this pace, I'll just keep buying old shit. Most times I'm not a fan of the tech in these cars. For me, I just need the ability to connect a phone and I'm happy.

Simple Search first line. Shits Insane.

    gx pricing.png

For perspective on the pricing, we can go buy a used G wagon for cheaper than these prices with the depreciation already in.

As for the Scout, I don't know how you guys feel about it. But not having a big V8 in vehicle that has such a cult following is a huge kick in the dick for me. I love the mix of classic/modern styling but that thing needs a V8 with forced options and one tons. They are about to miss the entire demographic that loved these things.

The GX550's are pretty nice. I wish Lexus still offered the v6 in the RX line.
